HBO Max’s The Last of Us crossed its halfway mark with episode 5, bringing new friendships and allies and taking them away just as fast and brutally. Sam and Henry’s story will always haunt me, but it seems like the show isn’t going to give us any breathers.
New episode 6 images tease that Joel has finally reunited with his brother Tommy after searching for him since the show’s beginning. Joel and Ellie reach Wyoming, with Ellie opening up about the latest loss the duo felt, but Joel catches sight of his brother, and the Miller brothers share an emotional reunion.
I’m sharing the images with you, along with what we can expect from the upcoming episode of The Last of Us.
The rough winter snow and cold wind aren’t enough to deter Joel and Ellie, considering they just burned their new friends’ corpses and escaped the dangerous Kathleen situation. With every episode bringing a new loss, the duo hasn’t had any time to process their grief or shock, but the long walk to Wyoming will probably help.
But on the other end of their long journey awaits Tommy, who had left Joel sometime after 2003 and joined the Fireflies. Though they loved each other, the Miller brothers did not part on the best terms, and the younger brother has found a semblance of peace and routine in his new life.
But when Joel shows up in Wyoming, where Tommy is currently residing with Maria, whom we also know from the game, the two brothers share a teary moment, grasping the other as if afraid they might not be real.
But if you’ve watched the episode 6 preview, you know that cheerful reunion won’t last long. Wait, you haven’t watched it? Well, I’ll leave that here, and then we can continue our analysis of the probable events of episode 6.
Since Tommy is an ex-Firefly, I think it’s safe to assume he did not believe in their mission to find the cure. Thus, when Joel turns up looking for his help to connect with the Fireflies to deliver Ellie, he won’t appreciate his elder brother’s return.
The brothers soon delve into their past, where both had to do questionable things like killing people just to survive, which will lead to a tense discussion, presenting the audience with a deeper look into Joel’s past after Sarah’s death.
The upcoming episode will also introduce us to Maria, the Wyoming settlement’s leader, who we know to have a close relationship with the Millers and Ellie in the game. In the preview, Maria warns Ellie not to trust too quickly, for only those we put our faith into can betray us badly.
The game’s fans might have some more theories for how episode 6 will go, but I don’t want to spoil the fun and talk about that here. But since the show has leaned on altering a few details, I’m pretty sure there will be a few surprises in store for everyone in next week’s episode.
