Ridley Scott’s Napoleon movie has released its first footage featuring Joaquin Phoenix. The film will debut in theaters on November 22 and will stream on Apple TV+ subsequently.
The historical epic marks the reunion of the director and actor after Gladiator in 2000 and casts Phoenix as Napoleon Bonaparte opposite Oscar nominee Vanessa Kirby as Empress Joséphine, Matthew Needham, and others.
Apple revealed the first footage of the Napoleon movie at their WWDC 2023 Keynote event on Monday, featuring Phoenix’s portrayal of the French military leader on board a large vessel. The footage can be viewed below (starting at 1:37:28):
The first advertisement for the Apple Vision Pro (via Brian Roemmele on Twitter) also includes some extra footage of Phoenix’s Napoleon riding into battle on horseback (starting at 17 seconds in):
The Napoleon movie, written by David Scarpa, will explore the French military leader’s tumultuous relationship with his wife, Empress Joséphine, as well as his rapid ascent to power.
The film will also showcase his famous battles, ruthless ambition, and strategic mindset as a military leader, which are his most renowned traits. The first footage of the film depicts Napoleon on a naval voyage to conquer much of Europe and on horseback leading his army into battle, demonstrating his prowess on both land and sea.
The first Napoleon footage indicates that the film could be Scott’s most ambitious and action-packed historical epic to date, despite the director being 85 years old. The film seems to depict many of Napoleon’s Europe-conquering adventures in graphic details, which will likely earn it an R rating.
Phoenix, who won an Academy Award for his role in Joker, will play Napoleon and audiences can expect another remarkable performance from him. Napoleon will debut in theaters this fall and will stream on Apple TV+ in early 2024.
