Jim Carrey has revealed that The Truman Show, one of the most notable films of his early years, was the fastest he’d ever accepted a project.
In a recent interview with Screen Rant, the actor/comedian and star of the upcoming film Sonic the Hedgehog 2 revealed that the fastest he had said yes to a role was 1998’s The Truman Show.
Around the time when the popularity of reality TV shows had started booming, The Truman Show dived deeper into the idea of a 24/7 surveillance show where Carrey’s character Truman Burbank was the star ever since his birth. With an accident on set, Truman starts questioning his reality as he begins learning that his whole life had been a lie, including his friends, family, neighbors, and even the town he lived in.
The film was a turning point in Carrey’s career and is a nightmare wrapped in a comedy flick, way ahead of its time and still considered relevant and scary. The Truman Show, in a way, could be regarded as the original “Black Mirror.”
Carrey explained that he’d come up with a similar idea in mind two years prior to reading the film’s script. So, when the actor finally read it, it was like Carrey’s thought had been birthed into existence with the perfect script,
“The Truman Show. First of all, I had thought of that concept two years before. I had noodled with it, but I couldn’t break the code. And then when I was handed that script, Andrew Nichols’ script, I read it and knew probably within ten pages that I had to do the movie. It was not a question. Eternal Sunshine was like that as well. Comedies are generally things that you have to consider. You don’t generally get a very well-formed comedy; at least I don’t. It’s like making a silk purse out of a sow’s ear a little bit. You’ve really got to work a comedy to keep it fresh; to make it something special. But those two scripts, more than any other, were just an immediate yes.”
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a similar kind of story with regards to technology moving faster than humans being able to grasp it. The 2004 film is a commentary on modern relationships with the premise revolving around a couple who decide to “delete” each other from their memories.
Carrey surely knows how to pick a project. With the actor recently stating that he plans to retire after the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, it’ll take an extraordinary script to get him back in front of the lens again. Speaking to Access Hollywood, Carrey had said,
“Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious. It depends—if the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink, that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might. I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 hits theatres on April 8, 2022.
