The ‘Green Lantern’ Series Will Feature a Gay Superhero

The War Horse actor Jeremy Irvine is cast in one of its lead roles as Alan Scott, the first-ever character to hold the Green Lantern mantle, and also a canonically gay superhero, in the upcoming TV show on HBO Max, Green Lantern.

If confirmed, Irvine will be joining Finn Wittrock in the series, who has been cast as Gardner.

However, HBO Max is yet to make an official comment.

Written by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, and Seth Grahame-Smith, Green Lantern reinvents the classic DC property through a story spanning decades and galaxies.

The series will begin with a focus on Scott in 1941, then move on to 1984 with Wittrock’s Gardner and the half-human/half-alien Bree Jarta, who has yet to have the actress announced.

Irvine himself isn’t gay, which might inspire a bit of backlash due to the proportionally small number of LGBTQ+ actors playing similar roles.

Irvine most recently starred in the USA Network series Treadstone. He is primarily known for his work in films like War Horse, The Railway Man, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, and Billionaire Boys Club.

Irvine also played the lead in 2015’s Stonewall, which told the story of the historical New York City riots that had kickstarted the LGBTQ+ movement.

Alan Scott is a key character in the Green Lantern series, not only for his history as a hero but also because he’s one of the few DC heroes to be openly gay in the comics. Green Lantern is now a perfect opportunity for Warner Bros. to bring more diversity to their superhero blockbuster production.

Scott was one of the main members of the Justice Society of America, the precursors of the Justice League, who’ll premiere in theatres when Black Adam gets released on July 29, 2022.

Warner Bros. didn’t inform if the upcoming Green Lantern series will be a part of the DC’s canon or if it’ll act as a standalone property, but since they are working in a new interconnected universe, Alan Scott could bridge Green Lantern with other DC properties.

HBO Max has ordered 10 one-hour episodes of Green Lantern. Although there’s no set date for Green Lantern to start production.
