Jason Sudeikis shares a hilarious story about the time Wilson praised him in a weird way while they were shooting Sudeikis’ first major role as a lead actor in Hall Pass.
The 2011 comedy features Wilson and Sudeikis as Rick and Fred, two buddies who get a week off from their marriages to do whatever they want. The film has a stellar ensemble of funny actors in supporting roles.
In the set of Hot Ones, a YouTube show where celebrities eat spicy wings, Sudeikis tells the host how he devoured the wings on set during a scene at a sports bar. He was only supposed to eat them when it was his turn to act, but he couldn’t resist.
Wilson noticed his appetite and gave him a strange compliment. Watch the video and read the full quote below (the section starts at 10:23):
Jason Sudeikis: I did this movie, Hall Pass. It was me and Owen Wilson, but then also Stephen Merchant, JB Smoove, Larry Joe Campbell. We did this scene taking place at a sports bar and we’re eating wings, and it was my first time being in a big studio movie lead, like Owen and I were on the poster kind of thing. We’re going around [the table], when you shoot all the people around, you have to keep moving the camera when you have the time and money, which they do for studio movies. And there were hot wings — and they weren’t this hot — and I’m eating them while the camera’s on Owen.
Sean Evans: They tell you not to.
Sudeikis: I know, well they didn’t before that, and I hadn’t done enough to have my method. [Chuckles] At some point, I’m eating them, and he just goes, “Gosh, you’ll just put anything in your body, huh?” And I’m like, “Oh, yeah.” He goes, “I’m so curious what you’d look like if you actually worked out and took care of yourself.” [Laughs]
For a decade, from 2003 to 2013, Sudeikis made millions laugh with his brilliant sketches on the legendary show Saturday Night Live.
He nailed the impressions of Joe Biden, Mitt Romney, and the funky dancer on the recurring segment “What Up With That?”. His comedy skills on SNL paved the way for his transition from TV star and movie rookie to Hollywood’s leading man.
Sudeikis’ movie career was boosted when he joined Jason Bateman and Charlie Day in the hilarious Horrible Bosses in 2011. The movie was a huge hit and launched Sudeikis as one of the most sought-after comedians.
He followed it up with more successes like 2013’s We’re The Millers and the 2014 sequel Horrible Bosses 2, which confirmed Sudeikis as a movie sensation.
Sudeikis voiced the main character in The Angry Birds Movie and its sequel in 2016 and 2019.
However, he also proved that he could do more than comedy as the lovable Ted Lasso on the TV series of the same name. The Apple TV+ show has made Sudeikis a household star as he has displayed his range of emotions, from funny to sad to angry.
Sudeikis went from a fresh face on Hall Pass to an Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actor for Ted Lasso, and we couldn’t be more proud of him.
