So far, any MCU film coming in May has not disappointed, and this year we’re sure it won’t either! Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will come to theaters this May, featuring the final adventure of the Guardians as we know them, and they will face powerful adversaries with high stakes.
In an interview with Empire, director James Gunn talked about one of those enemies, the very same teased in the end-credits scene of Volume 2. According to Gunn, Adam Warlock is “complicated,” but he is definitely “not a good guy,” and his MCU debut is one where he is “basically a baby.”
It’s kind of more complicated than that. But he’s definitely not a good guy. What we’re seeing is the infant form of Warlock, newly out of the cocoon, and he does not understand life very well. He’s basically a baby.
The film series director also explained why he chose Will Poulter as Warlock and hinted that he could become a “really important character” in the MCU. Read his full quote below:
I wanted somebody youthful, and I wanted the person who had the dramatic chops and the comedic chops, not only for this movie but for what Marvel will use Adam Warlock for in the future. He could become this really important character.
According to the comics, Warlock belongs to the Infinity Saga, MCU might have had the same plans for him after they teased his entry in the end-credits scene of GOTG vol.2
But Infinity War and Endgame didn’t bring him to life on-screen, and the upcoming film was delayed, placing Warlock in the Multiverse Saga.
For his character the MCU could take inspiration from some of his lesser-known missions, but we already know he’s Ayesha’s instrument to wreak vengeance on the Guardians.
In the comics, Warlock teamed up with the High Evolutionary against the Guardians, something we can expect from the 2023 film with Poulter and Chukwudi Iwuji going against the intergalactic team.
With Gunn’s statement, we can hope to see Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock beyond Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in the MCU. Considering he was an essential piece in the Infinity Saga in the comics, Marvel must have something big planned for his future appearances.
