James Gunn will Write & Direct DCU’s Superman: Legacy Movie

According to latest reports, James Gunn will not only be writing, but also directing DC Universe’s upcoming Superman: Legacy movie.

As the DCEU approaches its end with only a few movies left set to release in 2023, DC Studios is gearing up to launch a new DC Universe, which will be led by Gunn and Peter Safran as co-CEOs.

In January 2023, they announced the first wave of movies and TV shows for the DC Universe, titled Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, with more projects to be revealed later in the year. One of the confirmed films is Superman: Legacy, which Gunn will be officially penning the screenplay for.

In recent months, there have been reports suggesting that Gunn may also take on the role of director for the upcoming DC Universe installment. However, there was no official confirmation about Gunn directing Superman: Legacy yet.

But as of now, it seems that James Gunn is indeed taking on the roles of writer and director for Superman: Legacy.

During a recent interview with Comic Pop (via @John_ElSuperman), Tom King, the DC Comics scribe and architect of the DC Universe, hinted that Gunn is directing the upcoming Superman reboot. However, neither Warner Bros. Discovery nor DC Studios have released any official statements regarding this development yet.

Even before the official title was revealed, James Gunn had confirmed that Superman: Legacy would be the first new project in the DC Universe. Although it’s set to be a reboot, Gunn has emphasized that it won’t retell Superman’s origin story.

Instead, the adventure will center around a younger version of the Man of Steel who is still in the early stages of his superhero career. This means that audiences will get to see a fresh take on the iconic DC character in Superman: Legacy.

James Gunn has also indicated that this youthful version of Clark Kent will already have established relationships with some key DC characters. The situation can be likened to how Robert Pattinson’s character was portrayed in The Batman movie.

Although not entirely inexperienced as a crime-fighter, he still has a long way to go before evolving into the iconic hero that fans are familiar with from the comics.

Superman: Legacy is expected to hit theaters in 2025, so filming will most likely commence at the end of 2023 or early 2024. As for casting, announcements may come later in the year, possibly during San Diego Comic-Con.

If James Gunn is indeed confirmed to both write and direct the film, it’s possible that we won’t have to wait too long before we get our first glimpse of the new Man of Steel.
