James Gunn Reveals How He Sneaked a GotG 3 Reference into Infinity War

SPOILERS AHEAD! This page contains spoilers from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

James Gunn revealed that Avengers: Infinity War planted a seed for a significant twist in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The epic conclusion of Gunn’s MCU journey with the cosmic misfits featured the High Evolutionary, the mad scientist who created Rocket Racoon.

Before saying goodbye to the characters, he brought to life on the big screen, Gunn gave the Guardians a fitting farewell in his last Marvel movie.

Gunn spilled some tea to The New York Times about how he planted clues for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in other MCU movies.

He said he originally wanted Star-Lord and Gamora to lock lips in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, but it didn’t fit the plot. So, he persuaded Marvel Studios to let them kiss in Avengers: Infinity War.

Well, Gamora’s death is the big one, but even her first kiss with Quill comes in “Infinity War” after the first two “Guardians” movies appear to be building to it.

QUESTION

I begged them to have that kiss in the movie, because it was necessary to really cement their relationship. I had a kiss in “Vol. 2” that I cut — it was awesome, but it came in a weird time. At the end of “Vol. 2,” you establish the fact that they have feelings for each other pretty distinctly, but in “Infinity War,” we needed to establish that they were now boyfriend-girlfriend and this was a normal thing for them. It wasn’t really about the kiss, it was about showing that they were now a couple.

Now that the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy is over, we’re all wondering what’s next for our favorite space misfits.

Even though they showed up in Phase 5, the movie didn’t really connect to The Multiverse Saga much and focused more on its own stories. But with so many Guardians still alive, it makes us curious if they will join any more Avengers movies.

Star-Lord and Gamora

With Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars being so epic, it would be crazy if the Guardians of the Galaxy didn’t show up at all. These are the kind of movies where the whole MCU team up, and having the Guardians gang missing would be a huge bummer and kind of weird.

Neither Avengers movie has even begun shooting yet, so we’ll have to wait and see if the Guardians of the Galaxy characters are in it or not. Since the heroes are so loved by the MCU fans, it’s just a matter of when they’ll be back, not if they’ll be back.

They might already have some cameos planned in other MCU projects that Marvel Studios are keeping secret for now.

Hopefully, as Phase 5 moves on, it won’t be too long until they appear again after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.
