James Cameron recently spoke candidly about the box office prospects of his upcoming release, Avatar: The Way of Water, a sequel to his 2009 blockbuster, Avatar.
It’s been over a decade since Avatar released and became the highest-grossing film of all time. Cameron plans to continue the franchise with four sequels, the first of which is set to release on December 16, 2022.
Though it would be natural to assume that The Way of Water will follow the path of its prequel to become yet another blockbuster, many claim that the time span of over 10 years has removed the first film from the collective memory of the audience.
Thus, there is a high chance for the sequels to underperform and not live up to the high expectations of the audience. Such discussions are bound to continue till the release of The Way of Water in December.
It seems like director James Cameron himself has had his own doubts about the box office prospects of The Way of Water. As reported by Slash Films, in a recent interview with The Empire, Cameron criticized his own decision to make four sequels by calling it “the dumbest business case in history.“
He accepts that there is always the possibility of his film failing at the box office. Check out his entire statement below-
“If we did 20 per cent or 30 per cent less because the market simply doesn’t exist anymore, that would be bad. The trolls will have it that nobody gives a s*** and they can’t remember the characters’ names or one damn thing that happened in the movie … Then they see the movie again and go, ‘Oh okay, excuse me, let me just shut the f*** up right now.’ So I’m not worried about that.”

Thus, Cameron very honestly accepted the prospect of The Way of Water underperforming at the box office. However, if the first of his four sequels underperforms, it will be difficult to say what his next move will be, considering he has already put in too much work in the upcoming sequels as well.
Nevertheless, there are several reasons why The Way of Water could become yet another box office success. The audience largely went to the theaters to watch Avatar simply because of the visual spectacle Cameron offered.
In The Way of Water, Cameron is yet again ready to shock his viewers by creating new underwater motion capture technology. Thus, The Way of Water will be as visually appealing as its prequel, if not more.
As of now, we can only wait till December 16 to witness the spectacle that Cameron took more than a decade to create. Hopefully, it will not disappoint.
Avatar: The Way of Water will release in theaters on December 16, 2022.
