Jake Gyllenhaal receives a chilling 911 phone call, as seen in the first trailer for his upcoming movie The Guilty.
The crime thriller, which is a US remake of a Danish film of the same name will first premiere at the 2021 Toronto Film Festival in September, following which it will have a limited release in US theatres. Come October 1, it will be available on Netflix.
The first trailer does not contain any actual footage from the film, but nonetheless sets up the story’s eerie premise.
911 operators and dispatchers are no strangers to high-distress phone calls. But if the movie is closely following the plot of its Danish counterpart, this job may be a relatively new one for Gyllenhaal’s character Joe Bayler, who is not yet used to the requirements of the profession.
The trailer opens up with a black screen being filled with words from a 911 call.
Gyllenhaal asks for the address and nature of the phone call’s emergency and the woman confirms that she’s been abducted, trapped in the back of a van.
The call disconnects before the woman can reveal any more information.
Gyllenhaal immediately calls for units to be dispatched but without information like address, license plate, make of the car or even a name… there’s not much that can be done.
Of course, that won’t stop Gyllenhaal’s character from finding the truth in this twisted tale of misfortune.
Gyllenhaal acquired the film’s rights in 2018 after the Danish movie received massive critical acclaim. In 2020, Antoine Fuqua was roped in to direct and produce the film, while the script would be provided by Nic Pizzolatto.
In undisclosed roles are Ethan Hawke, Peter Sarsgaard, Riley Keough, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Paul Dano, Bill Bur and others.
Remakes have always big shoes to film, especially if the original has achieved high praise. Still, from the trailer’s YouTube comments it seems that Gyllenhaal has an army of fans who trust him to do justice to this film, while preserving the sacrosanct of the original.
Will the film follow the Danish original word for word or add its own dangerous flavor along the way? We can’t wait to see.
