Jake Gyllenhaal is coming to the happening world of the small screen with HBO’s newest drama show, The Son. The actor will star and serve as an executive producer in the production. The limited episode series will be adapted from acclaimed Norwegian author Jo Nesbo’s bestselling novel of the same name.
The HBO series is not related to the Pierce Brosnan-starrer The Son, which aired on AMC in 2017 and was set in the Wild West. In fact, the setting of the two shows could not be more different. Jo Nesbo’s novel follows wrongly convicted felon Sonny Lofthus, who is happy to serve jail time as long as he is compensated with drugs.
He does not remember much of his past but when he is confronted by a shocking truth from the old days, his life changes forever.
The Son is a jarring tale of one man’s revenge against Oslo’s ruthless crime and corruption.
The story will be brought to life by Denis Villeneuve, who is directing and producing the show. Jake Gyllenhaal and Denis Villeneuve have previously worked on together on two films – Prisoners and Enemy, both of which have been praised as masterpieces in the crime thriller genre.
The Son is not the only novel by Jo Nesbo to be adapted for the screen. His first standalone crime thriller Headhunters was made into a movie in 2011, starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.
A premiere date for The Son has not been announced yet by the cable network.
