Yellowjackets is a recent Showtime series released last month, and people have been left dumbfounded by its sheer brilliance. A series that follows the survival genre has used a few classic tropes but still makes it engaging because of the sheer conviction of the storytelling and adds its twist to it.
In fact, last week, the psychological thriller was renewed for season 2, with two more episodes from season 1 yet to be aired.
For those of you who don’t know, the story follows a group of high school soccer players estranged in some wilderness for 19 months after surviving a plane crash. How they descend into madness and chaos to make it out alive is the story.
That’s one hell of a tale and sounds pretty realistic as well, and fans have wondered if the show is based on a true story. Well, here’s everything you need to know about it.
Yellowjackets is inspired by the actual events that took place in 1972. In October that year, Air Flight 571 was bound from Uruguay to Chile with 45 passengers, 19 of whom were part of a rugby union team. The plane crashed somewhere in the Andes mountains. 34 passengers survived and were estranged for 72 days, and slowly they took all sorts of measures with the simple motive to survive.
Yellowjackets is not entirely based on this story, but it is heavily inspired by it. The premise is pretty much the same, but it subdues the realistic bits and takes creative freedom to give us an edgy thriller.
In fact, the show depicts the themes of it takes creative freedom to make an edgy thriller with underlying themes of false harmony in society and how the animalistic instinct of human beings comes into play when everything becomes about survival.
However, you will indeed be left with a chill down your spine when you listen to the actual events that took place in those mountains. People resorted to the most desperate measures to make it out alive, and I know what you’re thinking. Did they…? The answer is yes; they did resort to cannibalism.
Show creators have also mentioned how Yellowjackets is also inspired by the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding. In The Hollywood Reporter’s podcast, TV’s Top Five spoke about how everything in the society is a facade, and all normals of socialization fall away in the most extreme situations.
