One Piece is a legend in the world of anime. Close to 25 years since its adaptation into the animated world, and the craze and hype around it shows no signs of dying down. The show is getting a full reboot as Netflix and WIT Studio collaborate.
Recently, there were multiple rumours about WIT Studio using AI to generate and modify the drawn art from One Piece. Let us take a look at these allegations and ascertain if they are true.
1. Is WIT Studio using AI for One Piece Remake?
WIT Studio will not be using AI in the remake of One Piece, the Art Director for the remake, Tomonori Kuroda, is firmly against the usage of AI to any extent. The Studio has used AI in making earlier works, like ‘The Dog and the Boy’.
The internet was abuzz with the banter of anime lovers across the globe recently. This happened because there was news on the grapevine that the studio that is working on the remake of Oda’s near-divine work- One Piece, is going to be using AI.
There were multiple views on this, and the majority of fans who have watched and read the original work are against the use of AI. They believe this is going to spoil the ‘sanctity’ of the work.
The art, although old, is loved by anime viewers and manga readers around the world. They believe that by using Artificial Intelligence to replace the ‘genuine’ nature of the characters and the world, the essence of One Piece would be tarnished.
These discussions have had no winners yet, but word is out that these allegations against WIT Studio are baseless. In fact, the new Art Director is vehemently against the usage of AI. Even when it comes to backgrounds and landscapes (harder to draw by hand).
2. Why did these rumors come about?
The rumors that WIT Studio is going to use AI in One Piece’s remake are most likely assumptions drawn by netizens. This is because WIT Studio is a pioneer in using AI in anime. They produced the work “The Dog & the Boy” using AI.
WIT Studio made an (experimental) animated short film, “The Dog & the Boy”, which was aired on Netflix Japan. This work saw the usage of AI models in the making of the backgrounds.
Fans or amateur internet sleuths may have made this their basis for the assumption that it is going to be used in the One Piece remake as well. Since the experimental work saw great success and acceptance.
3. All We Know About the One Piece Remake
The famous anime series already produced by WIT Studio – Attack on Titan Seasons 1-3, Spy x Family, My Deer Friend Nokotan)- give us have a fair idea as to what to expect from the work. The quality is all but assured to be satisfactory. The remake will have a similar story, where it would initially follow the “East Blue Saga” of the original manga before branching out to additional plots.
The anime reboot features a team from Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen, and many other big names. What’s particularly exciting is that the team was repeatedly described as “young,” promising a fresh perspective and innovative ideas for the remake.
The release date is yet to be set, but the fans of One Piece wait eagerly to rewatch the series with a ‘modern touch’ that was promised to them (Perhaps as eager as they are for new episodes).
