The Witcher series is based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s books. Filled with monster hunting and political drama, it has garnered a large fan following around the world with just one season.
The Witcher season 1 was a smash hit on Netflix, and one of the best shows of late. It was the second most popular series of 2019, after the immensely popular Stranger Things.
Season 1 of The Witcher featured an interesting story and a solid cast. This consequently resulted in its fans clamouring for a second season. Here’s everything you need to know about it.
1. Premiere Date and Highlights
The premiere date of The Witcher season 2 will be sometime in 2021 though Netflix has not announced an official date yet. Hopefully, this will not be for long. Despite a long pause due to coronavirus, Netflix has announced season 2 will restart shooting soon.
Netflix confirmed with a tweet written like one of Jaskier’s catchy songs. Pre-production has now started ahead of the resumption, according to Redanian Intelligience, but it’s unclear how many of the hundreds have staff have returned so far.
Season two of the critically-acclaimed series has also been announced in November, 2019 by Netflix’s official Twitter page.
The first season of The Witcher shrugged off the idea that it was just here to replace Game of Thrones.
It confidently told stories in its own way and presented a fantasy world that has already captures people’s imaginations. Its originality is perhaps why it became so immensely popular.
2. Series Overview And Cast
A big talking point of The Witcher season 1 was how it told stories in multiple places across a non-linear timeline. Although the now-released official Witcher map and Witcher timeline really help, it resulted in a multi-tale anthology of sorts.
Showrunner Lauren Hissrich also stated that Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer all live in the same timeframe, and they can share their stories.
Season 1’s climax brought all the separate threads together nicely, priming The Witcher season 2 for a simpler plot.
It doesn’t mean we won’t have any of the episodic monster-hunting stories we enjoyed during season 1… it’ll probably just be different.
Hissrich will be collecting special short stories for season 2 of The Witcher and mentions the prospect of flashback scenes in an interview with Variety.
The official Twitter page for The Witcher retweeted this list of new actors that are going to join the family in season 2.
3. Official Trailer
The Witcher season 2’s trailer has not yet been released. Since filming is still relatively early, we wouldn’t expect Netflix to release a trailer until 2021.
4. Official Poster
Although there are no posters released so far, Hissrich shared a shot from production in March. Admittedly, you can’t see much but it does look like a possible return to Brokilon Forest, where Ciri spent part of the first season.
Until the official poster for season 2 releases, here are a few stills to remind you of the intense drama throughout season 1.
5. Expected Plot
Details are scarce, but the underlying mantra behind The Witcher season 2 story appears to be making things leaner, tighter, and a lot more straightforward.
While the first season roughly covered the majority of The Last Wish collection of short stories by Andrzej Sapkowski, a report by Redanian Intelligence suggests that season 2 will draw from A Grain of Truth by the Polish author.
However, we can probably expect a more straight forward story this time around. That’s not to say there definitely won’t be flashbacks or time jumps, but we can probably expect a more linear timeline.
In addition to The Witcher season 2, an anime-style Witcher movie has been announced for Netflix called The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. No release date has been set for that one yet, but we expect it before season 2 arrives.
