Have I been rewatching the first episode of Loki because I have no other way to distract myself from the fact that Marvel will only release ONE EPISODE AT A TIME?
*breathes* Of course I have — curse Marvel for this agonizing wait.
All the rewatching got me thinking, though: How strong is the TVA anyway? Is it stronger than the Infinity Stones? Did my baby Nat jump off that cliff for a paperweight? Is Gugu Mbatha-Raw single?
Lucky for you, I’ve managed to dig up answers to all of these questions (minus the last one). So, while we both wait, let me entertain you with the answers (unless you have Gugu’s number. Please contact me immediately if you do. Thank you.
1. How Powerful Is the TVA?
TVA is one of the strongest organizations in the MCU. They hold the power to delete entire timelines from existence (something even Dr. Strange cannot do) and erase individuals (birth and existence) from history. Their authority over ‘Time’ is unrivaled.
Sweet, eh? They also have a very handy incinerator stick. You just tap annoying people with it, and *poof*; they’re gone. (If you’re thinking about borrowing it, get in line).
But our personal grudges aside, it’s important to remember that the TVA draws most of its strength from the fact that they operate from a Null-Time Zone dimension — meaning that they strictly operate outside of Time. And the application of this concept around the Infinity Stones would explain the whole “paperweights” situation.
1.1 Is TVA Stronger Than The Infinity Stones?
The TVA isn’t stronger than the Infinity Stones — they just hold an advantage. Since TVA operates outside Time (in the Null-Time Zone dimension), the stones (or any other mystical power) don’t function at the TVA base as they usually would.
This would explain why Loki’s magic abandoned him during his trial and why the Infinity Stones appear useless inside the TVA office.
The situation would be different if the TVA played on fairgrounds. If they operated in a time-functioning dimension, they wouldn’t be so deceptively invincible against stronger foes. (Not talking about you, dear Loki, I speak of the Infinity Stones).
2. Who Created The TVA in MCU?
The three powerful entities known as Time-Keepers created the TVA and tasked them with protecting the Sacred Timeline. The TVA monitors the timeline and acts against Nexus Events, ensuring that the timeline doesn’t branch out.
The Time-Keepers, in turn, were created by He Who Remains — The being at the end of Time and the last director of the TVA. (This is the part where you and I nod along and pretend to follow all the ideas Marvel throws at us).
In the comics, the Time-Keepers aren’t necessarily “good” entities. They’re just better than their evil-er versions, known as Time Twisters. I can’t tell if that’s the case with the show or if we’ll even get to see these beings on-screen so early, but I have a feeling that the Time-Keepers and Eternals are going to give us a shock— just a hunch.
2.1 What Does TVA Want From Loki?
We can’t gouge out TVA’s intentions based on the first episode, but it appears they intend to recruit Loki to hunt down a dangerous variant. This isn’t the first Time TVA has recruited a time-traveler as a freelance bounty hunter. In the comics, Immortus was another one of TVA’s agents.
However, the interesting thing about Loki’s case is that he’s been tasked with stopping himself. Hopefully, episode 2 gives us more clarity, but for now, we know that another version of Loki is causing trouble for the TVA, and they are having a hard time capturing him.
The idea of Loki vs. Loki did strike me as corny at first (it’s so overdone at this point in pop culture), BUT I think it’s growing on me now. I’m honestly anxious to see how different this other Loki is and what makes him so dangerous.
3. About Loki
Loki is an American TV series created by Michael Waldron for Disney+ and Marvel. It is based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name and is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with events of the series taking place after Avengers: Endgame.
Tom Hiddleston reprises his role as Loki along side new faces like Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha Raw, Wunmi Mosaku, Sophia Di Martino, Richard E. Grant, Sasha Lane, Eugene Cordero and Erika Coleman.
After stealing the Tesseract in Avengers: Endgame, Loki is apprehended by the mysterious Time Variance Authority (TVA) and their Time-Keepers. Loki is given a choice between fixing all the timelines he broke with the Tesseract and death at the hands of the TVA.
