The White Lotus season finale ended with a bittersweet closure and stayed true to its satirical nature! One of the sweetest endings was for Quinn. The character who was just considered a gadget buff with zero interest in the real world is perhaps the only one who has paid attention to what the island indeed offered and grown as a person.
Furthermore, there were hints dropped about how Quinn could be gay, and the finale answers the question by not exactly answering it, I guess. *Trying to build up the hype is all*
So what exactly happened to Quinn at the end of The White Lotus finale, and is he gay?
Quinn is not gay. He abandons his family at the airport and returns to the island. In the final shot, we see him canoe with the crew to learn/explore Hōkūleʻa and paddle to Fiji.
Quinn seemed one of the most irrelevant characters at the show’s beginning, but it turns out he does seem to stand out from the rest of the characters. In a social satire about how the rich and privileged will never change, Quinn appears to be breaking the cycle.
One of the first signs of this is when he goes to sleep on the beach the first time, he sort of enjoys looking at dolphins jumping in and out of the ocean against a picturesque horizon. He develops a liking towards nature and the ocean especially.
We then see him deliberately sleep on the shore, and he is not really worried about his gadget. As the narrative progresses, he even starts canoeing with a crew of men.
Though we could see him approaching the men as a sign of his attraction towards them, the finale makes no indication of that.
Instead, it merely focuses on how Quinn doesn’t want to go back because there’s nothing to live for back home. He constantly reiterates to his family that he wants to stay back on the island, explore the seas, and truly live!
As Fred Hechinger, in a behind-the-scenes clip, mentioned that though Quinn’s parents get back into the same old cycle of privilege, he does the exact opposite and breaks that to be free.
Even the creator, Mike White, mentions how the show depicts a kid growing up and finding his own experiences and people and although the parents want that, they don’t want him to go to such extents.
But despite what anyone wants, Quinn seems to have found something new; A new world, if I may put it that, and perhaps even a new way of living. The question remains: Will this love for nature last, or will Quinn, just like his family gets back to the old cycle?
Will Quinn Get Back To His Old Ways?
If I were to stick to the pattern every other privileged character in the show has followed, I’d say Quinn will eventually get bored of the “same old ocean” and would want to get back to his earlier life.
This is because realistically, he hasn’t come face to face with problems like food, a place to stay, money, and earning a living. So right now, it’s like his honeymoon period with nature, and when that beauty becomes too dull, all that will remain are the problems.
That’s when shit would get real for our little Quinn, and he would want to go back. It’s like he’s just found his rebel phase in life and will sooner or later grow out of it. ,
