Dove Cameron Promises Powerpuff Girls’ Pilot Reshoot Will Get it Right

Not all is lost for the live-action remake of The Powerpuff Girls. Series star Dove Cameron has some positive updates regarding the classic cartoon’s remake.

The Cartoon Network series is easily a childhood-nostalgic classic from the 2000s, along with the likes of Pokémon, Tom & Jerry, Looney Toons, etc. The list is long because these cartoons really are irreplaceable gems even today.

So when The CW announced that it was making a live-action version of Powerpuff Girls, the internet united in questioning, “Who even asked for this?” Pair that with a horrendous (leaked) pilot script, and it was a total mess.

The live-action had plans to tell the story of an older version of the Powerpuff Girls, far different from the cartoon, initially starring Cameron, Yana Perrault, and Chloe Bennett as the titular trio.

The network, thankfully, decided to scrap the whole thing and reshoot the pilot with CW president Mark Pedowitz even calling it “a little too campy.” However, these reshoot changes led to the show losing one of its main stars as Bennet exited due to scheduling conflicts.

It seems like the show was hitting quite a few bumps with little to no progress. However, Cameron recently spoke to ComicBook about new updates on the series.

Where we’re at right now, I can confidently say, is that the producers and [writer Diablo Cody], and everybody involved, their last communication with me is that they’re very, very, very pleased in a way that we were all not. The first time we did the pilot, we’ve all talked about it and likened it to Game of Thrones, that did a whole pilot, and then they were like ‘Scrap it. If we’re going to do this, we have to do it right straight out of the gate, or it’s not worth it.’

Cameron said she was confident that they almost got it right but almost didn’t. The Bubbles actress has high hopes as she’s optimistic that the new pilot has gone through all the necessary revisions to get the essence of the animated series right.

Powerpuff is such a high concept show, and the way we wanted to do it was so high concept, that there were 99 ways it could have gone wrong, and one way it could have gone right. And I think we were close, but we didn’t nail it. That’s for a number of reasons. I remember them calling me and being like ‘This is how it ended up, and this is what we would rather do,’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, I can’t even be mad about that. That’s fair. Let’s do that, then.’ I think they really just want to get it right.

Take that with a grain of salt, if you will, as the leaked script shows what a blunder the original pilot was. The bar is pretty low if Cameron was confident in that one. (Seriously, do live-action anime remakes teach Hollywood nothing? *cough* Dragon Ball Evolution, Death Note *cough*)

(Please read at your own discretion because it’s unbearably cringy, to say the least.)

Hopefully, this time around, the creators don’t steal the original show’s magic to switch things up according to their vision of what it should be.
