Is Millionaire Detective worth watching? A review.
Loosely based on the novel of the same name, the anime Millionaire Detective Balance: Unlimited is an entertaining take on the overdone detective-spy genre that is widely popular.
It started airing on Fuji TV in the second week of April 2020 but unfortunately had to he discontinued due to unavoidable circumstances arising from COVID-19 in Japan.
Only two episodes had been released by then but fortunately the third episode will be out in June.Even with barely two episodes, it has found a community of people who are eagerly awaiting the release of more episodes.
This is not surprising since it has a thrilling plot combined with great characters and makes for an absorbing watch.
Read on to help decide whether or not you want to watch it!
1. Quick Review
The anime does entertain and make you laugh. The aesthetics are a huge appeal and it really does benefit from the great animation. The plot of two detectives, who are polar opposites of each other, solving crimes together ends up being both fascinating and amusing.
The character design is carefully thought out and their differences complement their chemistry well. As does the production design. The two main characters are beautifully drawn and animated.
2. Is it worth watching?
Plot
The plot of the anime revolves around the two contrasting characters of Daisuke Kambe and Haru Katou who have been forced to work with each other as team to solve crimes and mysteries. Initially, they do have friction but they warm up to each other over time.
Daisuke Kambe is a witty and clever detective who will resort to any lengths to ensure that his mission is successful. He is ridiculously wealthy making it easy for him to bribe suspects and informants to catch culprits.
Haru Katou is the total opposite. While Daisuke values everything according to its monetary value, Haru is the altruistic and kindhearted detective who is repulsed by Daisuke’s materialistic lifestyle. Even with meagre pay, Haru works for the force to bring justice and make people’s lives better.
As they work on cases together, they come in touch with their own personal demons and psychological trauma and focus on catching the culprits who threaten the law and order of society.
Since the plot has not unraveled enough (a mere 2 episodes), it is hard to comment on its narrative, plot development, progression. The first two episodes are mere introductions and nothing of substantial value takes place. One will have to wait for the release of more episodes.
But the aesthetics of the animation and visual pleasure can still be appreciated.
Characters
The personalities of Haru Katou and Daisuke Kambe are humorous and fascinating. The total contrast between the two creates a dichotomy of reactions and illustrates how the same situation can be interpreted in numerous different ways.
While Daisuke lives a hedonistic life, Haru believes strictly in altruism and welfare of all. While the character development isn’t apparent in the first two episodes, one could see a sort of symbiotic relationship developing as the plot progresses i.e more episodes released.
The other minor characters also help punctuate the anime with comic relief and help enhance the entertaining aspect of the anime.
Theme Music
The opening Theme Song, Navigator sung by SixTones, is exceedingly melodic and sets the perfect mood for the events of the episode to transpire.
Final Thoughts
The Millionaire Detective: Balance UNLIMITED is fun and its aesthetics are like candies for the eye. The plot is a good refreshing take on the detective genre. It is definitely worth watching!
