The Man Who Fell to Earth is a cult-classic film starring David Bowie, released in 1976. While the movie was an adaptation of the book of the same name, we’re now seeing another title in this franchise.
The Man Who Fell to Earth TV series was a much-awaited one, and people wondered what it would be about. Would it be a sequel, a reboot, or a prequel? Well, after the show’s premiere, we have an answer.
The Man Who Fell to Earth TV series is a sequel set 45 years after the original movie. We also see scenes from a time in the future in the first episode. So, all in all, there are three points in the timeline.
Considering that the movie is over four decades old, only a few of you would have watched it. But, even if you have, I bet your memory is a tad bit hazy. Fortunately, you don’t need to watch the original movie to enjoy the TV series.
However, watching the original will surely elevate your experience. I’ll be giving you the premise in this article, but don’t worry; I’ll save the spoilers for both the film and the series premiere for another article. So, let’s get to it.
In the 1976 movie, a man falls to Earth from a planet called Anthea. His planet is dying and needs to be saved.
As a result, he comes to Earth and makes it his mission to save his planet. Numerous characters and subplots are involved, which contribute to the larger narrative.
The current TV series is set 45 years after this occurrence. It addresses the significant events in the original movie and takes the narrative forward. Considering how the film ended, there’s always been scope for continuation, which is precisely what the show offers.
It has a few old characters and a bunch of new characters, and this time, it looks like not just Anthea but even planet Earth needs saving.
Another addition to this series is the shift between the present and a distant future. We see certain scenes that depict what the future looks like, and perhaps the journey in itself is the story.
While we don’t exactly know how many years into the future we’re looking at, it does signify some significant milestones that you’ll understand once you watch it. For now, it can be confirmed that we’re looking at three points in the timeline.
The first one is when the movie was set, and the second and the third are depicted in the series.
If sci-fi as a genre excites you, you will certainly enjoy watching the film and the show. The first episode aired on April 24, 2022, and subsequent episodes will be airing every week. Keep an eye out.
