Barry Allen has been running for a long time, facing multiple delays and obstacles, but he’s finally arriving. The Flash will hit theaters in the US on Friday, June 16, 2023, which is tomorrow, and the wait is almost over. The multiversal film is a soft reboot for the DCU, which has already planned a fresh new chapter, Gods and Monsters.
The reboot suggests that there is no room for a sequel for the 2023 film, but no one at DC Studios has ruled out The Flash 2 as a possible new addition to the new DCEU. Andy Muschietti even recently disclosed that the script for the sequel is complete, and he’d love to return for another project about the Scarlet Speedster.
The Flash 2 Possibility
James Gunn and Peter Safran’s big picture for the DCU may or may not include Barry Allen’s superhero, but since it is in the multiverse, there is a possibility the studio could move forward with The Flash 2.
In a recent interview with The Wrap, the film director mentioned that the sequel is directly linked to the 2023 film’s success. If The Flash can meet the expected box office collections, which is the same as Matt Reeves’ Batman ($770 million), after its worldwide theatrical run, the studio would be up for making a second film starring the speedster.
The Flash 2 Cast
Ezra Miller’s checkered past strewn with dropped criminal charges and unresolved allegations has put his return to the role in doubt. Nevertheless, DC Studios has not named any other actors who could wear The Flash ring and suit, but they haven’t confirmed Miller’s fate either.
Safran comments in a recent interview about Miller’s path of “healing” and how they are “fully committed to the recovery right now.” Muschietti explained in an interview with Variety how they couldn’t be replaced as the Flash. Read his quote below:
I don’t think there’s anyone that can play that character as well as they did. The other depictions of the character are great, but with this particular vision of the character, they just excelled in doing it. And, as you said, the two Barrys — it feels like a character that was made for them.
While Ezra Miller might not be out of the running to play Flash, the Johnson-McGoldrick script for The Flash 2 also leaves room for Michael Keaton and Sasha Calle to return as guest stars. Though, spoiler alert, I don’t think it is likely.
The plot for the potential sequel is still a mystery, so it’s hard to say who you can expect in the cast list. But Kiersey Clemons’ Iris West and Ron Livingston’s Henry Allen are expected to return.
The Flash 2 Release Date
Warner Bros. or DC Studios has not confirmed if The Flash 2 is even happening for sure or not. So, setting a release date or even a window is out of the question. However, if the movie were to be greenlit, we could come up with a potential window.
The upcoming DC films after The Flash, which have a release date, are Blue Beetle (August 18, 2023), Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom (December 20, 2023), Joker: Folie a Deux (October 4, 2024), Superman: Legacy (July 11, 2025), and The Batman 2 (October 3, 2025).
The Flash 2 will follow all these releases, which puts it in 2026 at the earliest, but there’s another question that comes to mind, which I will answer in the next section.
Is The Flash a DCU or an Elseworlds Film?
When James Gunn and Peter Safran announced the projects in the upcoming DCU Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, The Flash was not on the list. Though Gunn did suggest some titles have been kept secret in the slate, and more will be added in the future chapters, we don’t know where the fastest man alive fits in the new DCU’s picture.
Since The Flash resets the DCU, it could be that there is room for the speedster to return. Whether it be Wally West or Barry Allen, the DCU will keep its options open for telling Flash’s story. However, there is another path.
Like The Batman, both the 2022 film and the 2025 sequel, and Todd Philips’ Joker films are not part of the DCU but are part of the DC world. DC Studios has created the Elseworlds universe films, which are not part of the DCU canon but are canon. The Flash 2 could find its place among them if it doesn’t fit in Gunn-Safran’s DCU.
So far, this is all we know about the sequel to The Flash. If there are any other updates, which there will be sooner or later, we at Cine Dope will keep you posted, so stay tuned!
