The Boys Season 5 Update: Is The Boys Coming To An End?

The Boys season 4 is one of the most anticipated upcoming releases from Prime Video, and what’s been teased already looks to be the most explosive chapter of the show.

The popular Prime Video show will return with the first three episodes on June 13 and continue to release episodes weekly for the following five weeks. Before the release of this season, the development of The Boys season 5 was confirmed.

Previously, creator Kripke had been vague about the longevity of The Boys, noting that he has been proven wrong before in terms of show length, citing his fifteen-season series Supernatural.

1. When is The Boys Ending?

“The Boys,” Amazon Prime Video’s epic superhero satire series, will end with its fifth season.

The show’s creator and showrunner, Eric Kripke, announced “the end has begun” while promoting the series’ fourth season, which premieres Thursday on Prime Video.

“Season 4 Premiere Week is a good time to announce: Season 5 will be the Final Season! Always my plan, I just had to be cagey till I got the final OK from Vought,” Kripke wrote on X, referencing the powerful company that manages the celebrity-like superheroes on the show. “Thrilled to bring the story to a gory, epic, moist climax.”

Along with the news, he posted an image of what seems to be a redacted script for the last episode of the fourth season with, at the bottom, a profane message referring to the final season.

2. Why is The Boys Ending With Season 5?

Kripke smiled with anticipation at what he almost knew he would be asked when The Hollywood Reporter spoke with him later on Tuesday for an interview.

“From the beginning, I wanted to wrap it around season five,” Kripke tells THR. “And then I would say plans solidified that we would do it years ago. I think we were probably in the middle of making season three, so it could have been three or four years ago that we always knew.

I don’t know why I like the number five so much; it’s a good round number to where you get enough,” he continues. “It might have been because I was trained as a TV writer, and there were five acts. It gives you enough time to get to know the characters.

You can have your calm-before-the-storm moment, which is what season four is for me. I say calm… you know what I mean. It’s about the characters, and then you kick off into a climax.”

3. Why Ending The Boys After Season 5 Is The Right Decision?

Kripke’s decision to conclude The Boys after season 5 is a testament to his strategic storytelling. By adhering to his pre-determined plan, he’s able to maintain the integrity of the original arc for Homelander, Billy Butcher, and the rest of The Boys squad.

This approach prevents the series from being overextended due to network pressure, ensuring a satisfying conclusion.

As a result, the quality of The Boys’ next couple of seasons should hopefully be maintained. Thus far, The Boys has been a well-reviewed show, with a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score overall.

Currently, reception for The Boys has only gotten more favorable as the seasons have pressed on. Season 1 scored an 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, while The Boys season 3 rose to a near-perfect 98%. With these ratings, ending The Boys after season 5 will allow the show to quit while it is ahead.

Also, the show, The Boys is based on the timeliness that may get tiresome when stretched over many more seasons. Besides being a genre of satire on the superhero theme, the show carries overt reflections on current political themes of the day.

Keeping such hot-button issue-based content on for more than few years is already an uphill task, which will fit well in the five-season arc for The Boys.

4. Will Boys Season 5 seal the fate of the franchise?

Although The Boys will end after season five, its universe will plod on apace with spinoffs such as last year’s debut Gen V, the animated anthology Diabolical, and other projects currently being developed.

After the season five announcement, he says, “Look, I love this universe and this is the best job I’ve ever had; hopefully, Gen V will continue.

It’s just this particular story, the Butcher vs. Homelander story, that needs to come to a close. But I think this universe is a big one, and I think there’s room for other stories and other corners of it.”

6. About The Boys

The Boys is an American satirical superhero streaming television series developed by Eric Kripke for Prime Video. Based on the comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, which was originally published by DC Comics under their Wildstorm imprint before moving to Dynamite Entertainment, it follows the eponymous team of vigilantes as they combat superpowered individuals who abuse their abilities.

The show is a satirical take on the superhero genre and showcases a world where superheroes are corporatized and controlled by companies. What happens when these superheroes step out of line and rub some boys the wrong way, is the story.
