Warner Bros has released a new poster for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, featuring a familiar fantastic beast, the phoenix, returning to Hogwarts.
The third film in the Harry Potter spin-off series is just a few months away and the poster, along with the recently released trailer, hint at the story taking us back to Hogwarts, where it all began.
The poster shows a bright orange-scarlet red phoenix soaring over the Black Lake and towards Hogwarts. The tagline under the title reads “Return to the magic,” once again signifying the importance of the magical school for witchcraft and wizardry in the film’s plot.
At first, one might instantly guess that it is Albus Dumbledore’s phoenix, Fawkes, right? But what if I told you that the chances of this bird being Albus’ phoenix are slightly lower than you’d expect.
Let’s go back to the ending moments of the second film, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, where Credence Barebone, aka Aurelius Dumbledore’s tiny bird burst into flames to become a phoenix. Grindelwald then told him that the bird often arrives to someone in the Dumbledore family when they’re in dire need.
Now you could argue that the phoenix on the poster could still be Fawkes. However, Fawkes wasn’t owned by anyone before Albus and thus was a wild bird. So this might very well be another phoenix loyal to Aurelius.
The title suggests the film will explore the “secrets of Dumbledore.” Now that Aurelius’ identity has been revealed, we don’t know which Dumbledore could get the spotlight. Either way, both the Dumbledores are sure to have important roles in the film.
The only way that the phoenix on the poster could be Fawkes is if Newt introduces Albus to him. The third film is set in 1939 and Dumbledore met Fawkes sometime before 1938 and although Newt Scamander didn’t exactly gift the bird to Albus, the two supposedly connected because of him.
To add on to this – Dumbledore already had Fawkes when the bird’s tail-feathers were used in two wands that went to Tom Riddle and Harry Potter. Riddle got his wand from Ollivander in 1938 – go figure.
The opinion and hype over Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore seems to be split as some fans are still upset over the studio replacing Johnny Depp for Mads Mikkelsen in the role of Grindelwald.
Directed by David Yates, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore arrives in theaters on April 15, 2022. But before that Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts will premiere on HBO Max on January 1, 2022.
