Nostalgia always hits us hard, and That ‘90s Show follows the same formula. The latest sitcom on Netflix is a sequel or spin-off of the popular 90s sitcom, That ‘70s Show. If you’ve been a fan of the original show, you’ll be hit by a boost of nostalgia while watching the sequel.
That ‘90s Show begins fifteen years after the That ‘70s Show finale, when Eric and Donna drop their daughter, Leia, in her grandparents’ house in Point Place for the summer. The fictional town of Point Place still remains the same as we saw it in the original show, and the first season is full of easter egg surprises!
But sometimes, nostalgia is not all. Although all of us would love to go back to our childhood days or carefree bliss, a show cannot just bank on nostalgia to appeal to today’s audience. Thankfully, though That ‘90s Show is mostly nostalgia, it also has some feel good moments which are enjoyable irrespective of it being a spin-off.
That ‘90s Show is definitely a good attempt at recreating the nineties and bringing back the old-school sitcom vibe. It may not be as iconic as That ‘70s Show, but is definitely worth giving a try if you’re looking for a fun, light-hearted sitcom to binge on.
Is That ‘90s Show worth watching?
If you’re a fan of That ‘70s Show, you’ll probably love That ‘90s show as well, as it is practically a sequel of the show. The sequel features several characters from the OG series and not just in cameos!
If you’ve not watched That ‘70s show and just want to try out the sequel as it is, it is still a good bet for you. That ‘90s Show will be worth watching for you if you’re a fan of old-school sitcoms with the trademark laughing cues.
That ‘90s Show has a typical 90s vibe, as the name suggests. If you’ve grown up watching shows like Seinfield, Friends, Full House and Two and a Half Men, That ‘90s Show will not disappoint you. It is like a trip back to childhood for all 90s kids, and will not fail to bring a smile to your face.
Those of you who are used to more contemporary sitcoms, such as Brooklyn Nine Nine or Schitts Creek might not be able to relate to the vibe of the series, but I won’t say it isn’t worth a watch.
Overall, That ‘90s Show is a funny, nostalgic joyride to the 90s and is a great choice for a light-hearted watch.
What is That ‘90s Show about?
That ‘90s Show is a sequel to That ‘70s Show and is set in the same fictional town of Point Palace as the original series. The show follows the plot of a typical sitcom – a gang of teenagers navigating through the ups and downs of life.
The series introduces Eric and Donna’s daughter, Leia in the series and her gang is the focus of the show. Eric and Donna were both prominent characters of That ‘70s Show and is still a part of the sequel.
The show gives off the vibe that nothing much has changed at Point Place since the events of That ‘70s Show, which of course was set in the 1970s. That ‘90s Show is set in the 90s, and tries to capture the comedy and flavor of that age.
Like most sitcoms, the show does not have a particular plot but each episode is like a slice of life and revolves around one hilarious incident or the other.
Is That ‘90s Show better than That ‘70s Show?
It is hard to say whether the show is better than its predecessor based on just one season. However, I don’t think we can come to a consensus about this even after watching both shows. If you’ve not watched That ‘70s Show, you might enjoy That ‘90s Show as a standalone series.
But if you’ve watched That ‘70s Show, you’ll probably have a completely different opinion. Most of the time, it is always the old one that is closer to the heart. Let’s give the show some time, and hopefully it’ll find its own loyal fanbase!
