Nothing sells more than nostalgia, and putting this notion into check is yet another huge franchise — Netflix has just released That ‘90s Show, which will immediately remind you of the show that was actually insanely popular in the 90s, That ‘70s show.
That ‘70s show was a hilarious, endearing sitcom (that continues to generate a lot of memes and entertainment) starring Topher Grace, Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Danny Masterson, Laura Pepron and Wilmer Valderrama
So is That ‘90s show related to it in any way? Is it a sequel, spin-off or reboot of That ‘70s show?
That ‘90s Show is a spin-off of That ‘70s Show, which takes place 15 years after the events of the show, focusing on the original cast’s kids. While technically not a sequel, it does occur in the same universe and depicts the original cast as well.
The Forman household was one of the major settings of That ‘70s Show, where most of the action took place. So it is only fitting that That ‘90s Show as well returns to this house and makes it its main setting.
As such, the first episode begins with Kitty and Red in their iconic kitchen. Soon, Eric and Donna appear to visit for Thanksgiving, happily (if comically) married with a nerdy yet rebellious daughter, Leia — named, of course, after Eric’s Star Wars obsession.
Leia’s introduction transitions into introducing the rest of That 90’s gang: Gwen, Nate, Jay, Ozzie and Nickie. You’ll have a blast getting to know these new characters, especially with some of them being a reflection of their parents and also bringing in That 70s Show dynamics within the new friendship!
Talking about That 70s Show, we do get an update on most of the major characters’ lives. Eric is now an adjunct professor, Donna is an author, while Fez becomes a hairstyle. I’ll let you discover Jackie and Michael’s adult lives on your own, as it is definitely a treat when they appear and I don’t want to spoil it for you!
Do I need to watch That ‘70s Show before That ‘90s Show?
You don’t need to watch That ‘70s Show in order to watch That ‘90s Show, as it doesn’t affect the spin-off’s plot in any way. That ‘90s Show can be watched as a standalone sitcom as well.
Other than guest appearances, That 70s Show doesn’t really bleed into the spin-off, nor does it have any major impact on the Netflix show’s plotline.
However, the guest appearance themselves are alluring enough to make you curious about That ‘90s show. So if you haven’t watched it, I’d recommend you trying it out!
