Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer, Michael Waldron, discusses Scarlet Witch’s future in the MCU and addresses questions about her potential return.
Wanda suffered a huge loss in the Disney+ series, WandaVision, after which she transformed into a complete villain in the Multiverse of Madness. In the Sam Raimi directorial, Wanda is pitted against Doctor Strange as she tries to tamper with timelines to reunite with her sons, Billy and Tommy.
Wanda’s fate has been a topic of discussion for MCU fans for a long time. Although she committed some serious crimes, including killing Earth-838’s Illuminati, we see her showing remorse for her actions in the end of the film. Finally, she ends up sacrificing herself to fix the damage she had caused.
As of now, Scarlet Witch is considered to be dead. However, Multiverse of Madness left her fate pretty much open-ended.
In an interview with the Empire Magazine, writer Michael Waldron was asked about Wanda’s fate in the MCU. Waldron’s answer was quite ambiguous. Here’s what he had to say.
“She’s removing herself from the board… For now? Forever? We’ll see. I’d like to see her again…”
The MCU has faked the deaths of several characters before. Characters like Loki and Phil Coulson made multiple comebacks in the Infinity Saga. Even Vision, who was presumed to be dead in Avengers: Infinity War, found a way to return in WandaVision.
Therefore, there’s a high chance of Scarlet Witch making a similar comeback in the MCU, especially since her fate was left open-ended in the Multiverse of Madness. After all, she is considered to be the crown jewel of the Multiverse Saga. Her story cannot end so soon. We may see her return in Loki season 2 or Agatha: Coven of Chaos.
However, going by Waldron’s comments, it might take a while for Scarlet Witch to return to the MCU. Hopefully, Marvel does not make the same mistake with Wanda that they did with Iron Man. Tony Stark was killed off when the character was at the height of his popularity.
At this point, Scarlet Witch is one of the most popular characters in the MCU. So, instead of delaying her eventual return, the MCU should consider bringing her on multiple other projects. She is also one of the most layered characters in the MCU, so having her around will make the franchise more interesting.
