Red Notice has claimed the top spot as Netflix’s most-watched movie this week, and director Rawson Marshall Thurber thinks there’s a good chance the action-comedy might get a sequel or two.
The film starring Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds is packed with adventure, both on and off-screen.
Behind the scenes, it has been a bumpy ride as the film went to Netflix when Universal couldn’t afford it, and after being put on hold due to the pandemic, it is finally out there. The sheer star power alone is enough to make people tune in to give it a try.
Thurber spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about his experience working on the film. When asked about a sequel, the director said it was a “real possibility.”
When asked further about a part 2 and 3, Thurber said,
If we were to make a sequel, the only responsible thing would be to make two and three back-to-back. It’s such a big production, and if you can mount it one time, it will be better for everyone. Including for my mental health.

Netflix took a significant risk, making the film their most expensive one to date at a price of more than $250 million, and by the looks of it, it has definitely paid off.
Thurber explained that COVID-19 was one of the major factors contributing to the high budget,
There was a masquerade ball sequence that was supposed to have 300 extras as Dwayne and Gal dance together. We weren’t allowed to have that many people together, so the actors wore N95 masks under their masquerade masks.
And we had to shoot it in layers, in plates, and stitch those pieces together. That is why the budget went up. We started the movie with 400 visual effects shots — it wasn’t a visual effects movie at all — and ended with 1,500 or so.

Red Notice became the biggest opening day title for Netflix with a total of 148 million hours to date, claiming its top spot on Netflix’s new website about the platform’s Global Weekly Top 10 Titles.
Although Netflix hasn’t officially confirmed the sequels, it is definitely in the cards. All three leads are currently busy with other projects, so even if it does get greenlit, it might be a while before we get to watch it.
