Is Oshi no Ko Season 2 Overrated?

Oshi no Ko has made a breakthrough in the new gen anime scene from the get-go with its twisted first episode. The anime, known for page-turning mystery and Ai Hoshino, is still topping the popularity charts as always.

Season 1 of the Oshi no Ko anime was an instant hit among the fans, from the breathtaking opening to the engaging characters. Season 2, which debuted this year, is still ongoing.

While the second season is not lacking love, there is still ongoing debate about if it has something good to offer anymore or has it become overrated. Today, we’ll discuss such points in this blog.

Season 2 of the Oshi no Ko- What has Changed?

Season 2 of Oshi no Ko was first announced after the finale of season 1 on June 28, 2023, and the second season made its most anticipated comeback on July 3, 2024. It starts its adaptation from chapter 41 of the manga.

Season 2 presents the fans with the eye-pleasing grandeur of a 2.5D Stage Play. Our beloved characters are rehearsing for the upcoming adaptation of the popular manga ‘Tokyo Blade’ by Abiko Samejima.

Why Fans Hate the Second Season of Oshi no Ko?

Many long-time viewers of Oshi no Ko feel that season 2 has strayed from everything the previous season had set out for – mystery, idol life, and revenge drama. The new arc about the stage play instead feels like an ‘out of place’ slice-of-life drama.

The second season, instead of building up the story, focuses more on the unrelated characters and subplots, contributing nothing to the plot development. Also, the writing of the mangaka character, Abiko, is not well received among the fans

Season 1 kept fans on the edge of their seat with the shocking premise and the subsequent buildup with the well-written new characters like Akane. While all season 2 does is keep dragging the stage play at an excruciatingly slow pace with unnecessary melodramatics.

Why the Season 2 Plotline is Justified

Even after the high of season 1, Oshi no Ko has faithfully kept its audience hooked with its extraordinary visuals and creative directions. It is a very tough thing to do as a vastly popular series.

Regarding the current arc, 2.5 D Stage Play, which is one of the hyped arcs of the series, the anime is doing everything necessary to maintain that hype. The storyline gives a genuine insight into the ‘behind the scenes’ issues of the theater production, which is like a breath of fresh air.

The 2.5 D Stage play arc is also important as it wonderfully adds depth to the characters. From Kana and Akane’s rivalry, Melt Narushima’s character focuses on a realistic approach to Aqua’s PTSD. Without this plotline, we’d never be truly able to relate to them as we do now.

Despite incorporating every possible cinematic element- from unique direction style to the iconic Osts to delving into the core of the entertainment industry, fans can agree that the plot has somewhat fallen weak.

If we were to strip season 2 of Oshi no ko of its budget exceeding animation and production, there would be nothing left worth hyping over. The story’s main suspense has somewhat faded, with characters like Aqua, Kana, and Akane being the saving grace.

But at the same time, Oshi no Ko has always been about the showbiz business, and all season 2 does is expand on it. Both the arc and character writing are amazing, which makes it a masterpiece. But the series’s glaring shortcomings may put Season 2 into the overrated category.

About Oshi no Ko

Oshi no Ko is a supernatural crime-solving manga series written by Aka Akasaka and illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari. It has been serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Young Jump since April 2020 and received an anime adaptation in 2023.

The story follows a doctor, Goro, reincarnated as his favorite idol Ai’s kid. Ai names him Aquamarine and his twin sister, a reincarnation of a patient at the hospital, Ruby. Ai is later killed by a stalker who was also responsible for Goro’s death. As Aquamarine swears revenge on the stalker for his mother’s demise, Ruby follows the same path as her mother to become an idol.
