Severance is getting grittier and more intense with each episode. The twists, turns, and reveals do not seem forced and make us wonder what Lumon truly is.
After Episode 6 revealed Regabhi as the person behind Petey’s reintegration, Episode 7 unraveled a much bigger secret. Mark showed Alexa the picture of his wife and tore it to just prove that he was over her. However, he later sticks it back with tape, and we see that it is a photo of Ms. Casey.
That reveal left me stumped and raised a million questions in my mind. With Season 1 approaching its end, it seems like there’s something beyond our imagination at play in the company.
However, the most significant question I had was if Ms. Casey was actually Gemma, Mark’s wife.
Ms. Casey could be Mark’s wife. The wellness counselor works part-time in Lumon and could either be Mark’s wife’s clone, or she could be Gemma, who is resuscitated with Kier Eagan’s conscience.
Ms. Casey is the wellness counselor who works in the mental wellness ward of the Lumon company. We have seen her interacting with Mark and Irving, and she is the only employee we’ve seen so far who is robotic.
In Episode 7, when we see Mark stick back the picture of his wife, we are shown that it is Ms. Casey’s picture. This could mean that Ms. Casey is actually Gemma. Mark does mention that his wife died in a car accident, but we don’t know much else.
All this information paves the way for two theories. The first is that Lumon resuscitated Gemma and installed Kier’s conscience in her mind. If you remember, in the Perpetuity Wing, Kier’s quote read, “The remembered man does not decay.” This could hint at the transfer of Kier’s conscience to the subsequent CEOs of the company.
However, the long game for Lumon would be to deploy Kier’s conscience to other employees of Lumon as well. Ms. Casey could’ve been one of the first test subjects, to see if this could be possible.
In an earlier episode, Harmony had also mentioned that Ms. Casey is a part-time employee at Lumon. She also tried to experiment with her and studied her actions while Casey kept an eye on Mark and Helly.
These things indicate that Ms. Casey could have Kier’s conscience in her body. Alternatively, Ms. Casey could merely be a clone of Gemma’s body but with Kier’s mind. This is why it is taking time for her to learn the ways of human interaction.
Well, whatever the theory is, we might know more in the upcoming episodes when the Eagan family gala happens. Severance has two more episodes in this season, and I can’t wait to find out Lumon’s secrets.
