Episode 2 of Hawkeye introduced us to Maya Lopez/Echo as the Tracksuit Mafia’s boss. But she won’t be the show’s real villain.
In the comics, Echo belongs to the Daredevil realm of storylines. Maya’s real father was killed by Kingpin, who deceived her into believing it was Daredevil who did it.
Although she is sent out to kill Daredevil, she falls in love with his civilian persona Matt Murdock.
When the revelation hits home that not only are they the same people, but her adoptive father also lied to her about, well, everything, Maya falls into a prolonged identity crisis. It is in the aftermath of these events that she adopts the persona of Ronin.
I know, I know, the MCU has introduced Ronin as Clint’s alternate persona. But technically, he’s the second person to have used the title (and he won’t be the last).
If Maya’s original storyline is anything to go by, she won’t be Hawkeye’s real villain. At this point, she’s either disillusioned into leading the Tracksuit Mafia by Kingpin or another similar figure.
Or, has a super-good agenda masked under her antagonistic actions.
It is also left to be seen if she will take on Ronin’s role from Clint, like Kate, who takes on Hawkeye’s. Although, that would waste her already cool persona of Echo, which has its own show coming up.
In the meantime, Echo-starved fans can catch her in the first ten seconds of the Kate Bishop featurette. Firing shots, backed by her Tracksuit Mafia, Maya looks extremely powerful (and pissed), and I can’t wait to see more of her in the upcoming episodes.
If you are looking for villains to pin down, there are two other very suspicious characters — Eleanor Bishop and Jack Duquesne. Or, Hawkeye could pull a fast one on us and introduce us to a whole new villain.
Episode 3 of Hawkeye will premiere on Disney+ on December 1.
