Kier Eagan was first mentioned in Severance Episode 3 when Irving takes the entire team to the Perpetuity Wing. This Wing includes the statues of all CEOs who ran Lumon right from the first man called Kier Eagan.
Kier Eagan was the first CEO of Lumon Industries and is considered to be the man who started it all. Wherever Lumon is today, it’s all because of the legendary Kier Eagan. He served as the CEO from 1865 to 1939 and then passed away.
Considering Lumon is suspected to lie and do a lot of dirty work, is there a chance Kier Eagan is still alive and running the company?
Kier Eagan might still be alive and could be running the Lumon Industries. This could be through Kier’s consciousness, which has been preserved for years after he’s died and inserted in the subsequent CEOs.
The entire Perpetuity wing has an eerie vibe. The people have built replicas of Kier’s home, bedroom, bed, and so on.
We also hear Kier’s voice coming from the speakers as he talks about his philosophies and how he wants to impart his knowledge to all the employees of Lumon. What puzzles me, though, is Burt’s conversation with Irving.
He says that Kier Eagan is speaking to employees with not just books and paintings but also by other means.
Even Harmony reprimands Mark by telling him how he can answer Kier after Helly tries to commit suicide under his watch. There are other hints too that make me wonder if Kier is alive.
The company’s current CEO is James Eagan. When Irving and the rest of the team enter the Perpetuity Wing, there’s a quote by him which says, “History lives in us, whether we learn from it or not.”
On the opposite wall, we see Kier Eagan’s quote: “The remembered man does not decay.” These two lines could be seen as quotes or as a secret message for all employees working at Lumon.
Here’s what I think these two lines might actually mean. Before dying, Kier Eagan would’ve found a way to preserve his consciousness. The quote mentioned before can indicate this.
While we don’t know what Lumon Industries does, we can guess that they are experts in the field of biotechnology, considering their ability to carry out the Severance procedure. So it wouldn’t be surprising if Kier’s consciousness is somehow preserved.
James Eagan’s quote, on the other hand, could indicate that Kier’s consciousness is being transferred into subsequent CEOs. This is pretty much why the quote reads that history lives within us.
When you look at these two hints along with Burt and Harmony’s statements, it is quite possible for Lumon to preserve Kier’s consciousness. While all these are speculations, we might soon know the reality in the upcoming episodes.
