Episode 3 of Loki settled the debate on Lady Loki’s identity, and it turns out many of us were wrong. Partially.
Though nothing particularly significant happened (Loki facing imminent death doesn’t count, it’s been done way too many times), this episode was well-spent on characterization. Not only did the two Lokis trade magical ‘how-to’s, we saw them exchange brief stories of their distant lives and the truth about where TVA’s agents come from.
Amidst these brief exchanges, Lady Loki also confirmed her identity in Episode 3. The Variant is, in fact, Lady Loki, not The Enchantress. She chose to change her name to Sylvie, but it has nothing to do with Sylvie Lushton. She exists as one of Loki’s many parallel selves.
1. Who Is Sylvie Laufeydottir in Loki?
That [Loki] is not who I am anymore. I’m Sylvie now.
Sylvie Laufeydottir to Loki Laufeyson
Sylvie is one of Loki’s many variants. She’s the equivalent of the comic’s Lady Loki in the MCU and is the TVA’s most wanted Variant for her crimes against the Sacred Timeline. Like the original Loki, Sylvie is a master sorceress and shares similar powers with him.
Though not much is known about her at this point in the series, we know that her life has been much different from Loki’s. If my guess is right, the TVA isn’t after her only because of her breaching the timeline and creating a Nexus Event. They’re likely threatened by the information she has on them.
For now, it’s been established that Sylvie and Loki’s skill set is similar, but not the same. Unlike Loki, Sylvie can use her magic to mind-control others and use their bodies to host her consciousness. But she can’t seem to use Duplication Casting — one of the skills the original Loki is famous for.
2. Difference Between Sylvie Lushton & Sylvie Laufeydottir?
While the two share the same name, Sylvie Lushton and Laufeydottir are two different characters.
Lushton appears in the comics as The Enchantress. Laufeydottir, however, is a Variant of Loki solely appearing in the MCU. Though Laufeydottir’s character borrows heavily from both Lady Loki and Enchantress, she represents Lady Loki in the MCU.
This would mean that technically, I wasn’t entirely off with the theory about The Variant being Sylvie Lushton’s Enchantress. Marvel seems to have deliberately mixed the two characters together.
For example, while Laufeydottir appears to have Enchantress’ blonde hair, she wears Lady Loki’s signature green and gold (plus the short hair!). And while Lady Loki wasn’t a different character but only Loki’s consciousness in a female body, Laufeydottir is her own person.
What exactly does Marvel hope to accomplish with this mashup? Nobody’s sure. Guess we have no choice but to wait another week now.
3. About Loki
Loki is an American TV series created by Michael Waldron for Disney+ and Marvel. It is based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name and is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with events of the series taking place after Avengers: Endgame.
Tom Hiddleston reprises his role as Loki along side new faces like Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha Raw, Wunmi Mosaku, Sophia Di Martino, Richard E. Grant, Sasha Lane, Eugene Cordero and Erika Coleman.
After stealing the Tesseract in Avengers: Endgame, Loki is apprehended by the mysterious Time Variance Authority (TVA) and their Time-Keepers. Loki is given a choice between fixing all the timelines he broke with the Tesseract and death at the hands of the TVA.
