Geralt of Rivia, the popular protagonist of the Netflix fantasy drama The Witcher, has been winning hearts since he made his first appearance. Though Geralt as a character has enough potential to stand on its own, we cannot deny that Henry Cavill’s portrayal gave the series a big boost.
But recent rumors suggest that the Superman actor will not be returning for the third season of The Witcher. Since Cavill has already portrayed Geralt in the first two seasons, it’ll be hard for us to accept someone else stepping into his shoes.
It seems like we can still take the news with a pinch of salt because these are just rumors as of now. Neither the makers nor Henry Cavill himself has officially confirmed or denied the rumors.
According to recent reports, the makers have already found a replacement for Cavill. While the name might shock some, it might delight others. The lucky one seems to be none other than Matt Bomer. As per rumors, the actor is being seriously considered to replace Cavill in the series.
Will Henry Cavill Be Replaced as Geralt of Rivia? If so, Why?
So, as far as it goes, nothing seems to be official yet. Both the producers and Netflix have not made an official comment so it’s just a mere rumor as of now. But according to Variety, Henry Cavill is leaving the show after the second season. Plus, the likelihood of it happening is quite high given Cavill’s busy schedule.
For a moment, let us consider the rumors to be true. There is still no clear explanation as to why the makers would take such a huge decision. There may have been some behind-the-scenes disagreements, and things might not have worked out the way they should have.
As far as fans and critics go, Henry Cavill has been widely accepted as Geralt and the first season of The Witcher also received rave reviews. So, there is no reason to think Cavill is not a good fit.
Fan theories have come up with some absurd reasons. One of the theories suggested that, apparently, Henry Cavill’s stars are not aligned for the actor to star in multiple shows or series.
I am not taking any of this seriously unless there is some official confirmation because there is hardly any concrete reason to support these rumors. If this is true, it may be because of some disagreement between Cavill and the cast.
Apart from that, Henry Cavill’s busy schedule or the losses incurred by the team could be probable reasons. The Witcher’s cast and crew have been facing misfortunes since the shooting for the second season began in 2020.
In the earlier months of 2020, the pandemic hit the world, and every industry had to face considerable losses. When the cast finally began shooting, one of the most important members of the cast, Kristofer Hivju, tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the shoot to a stop again.
Following that, the UK government imposed strict lockdowns due to the pandemic, so the shoot was halted till mid-August. Due to the emergence of the beta form of the virus, the UK remained in lockdown for a more extended period than other countries. Since most of the shoot was supposed to take place in the UK, the team suffered more.
If all of this was not bad enough, when everything finally began to fall into place, Henry Cavill seriously injured himself while jumping with his armor on.
Maybe The Witcher team cannot afford a star like Henry Cavill after suffering so many losses. All of these could be probable reasons if the rumors are true.
Is Henry Cavill Going to Return as Geralt?
Henry Cavill is returning as Geralt of Rivia for the second season of The Witcher, dropping on Netflix on December 17, 2021. The show has already been renewed for a third season. If the rumors of Cavill leaving the show are not true, then he will return as Geralt for the third season as well.
I guess we have to wait for Netflix to release an official confirmation or keep an eye out for shooting to begin for the third season before we can get a confirmation.
The Argument for Matt Bomer to Play Geralt of Rivia
As per recent rumors, Matt Bomer is being considered to replace Henry Cavill as Geralt in The Witcher.
Bomer is probably being considered because of his popularity and talent, considering he is a Golden Globe-winning actor. Apart from that, with his piercing blue eyes and chiseled jawline, he certainly looks the part.
Most importantly, if at all Henry is leaving, it might be that Matt Bomer was one of the actors available to fill in his shoes. But anyway, all of this is just speculation. As of now, all we can do is wait for more intel.
