Glenn Radars is the ideal mysterious teacher with a broody past that acts indifferent at first but soon opens up and cares for his students.
At first glance, Glenn is a lax substitute teacher who doesn’t seem to care about anything.
However, his strong opinions on magic make fans wonder about his past and what led him to declare magic as nothing but a killing tool, especially in a world that heavily relies upon it.
As the story builds up, his past has started to reveal itself. Everything ranging from Glenn’s identity to his most well-kept secrets is now ours to explore!
1. Who is Glenn Radars?
Glenn Radars is the 19-year-old protagonist of the Akashic Records series, who, due to a series of events, ends up becoming a substitute teacher in Sistine Fibel’s class.
Glenn was once a famous assassin who was said to be a fantastic magician killer working for the Imperial Court Mage Corps.
His codename was Number 0, or “The Fool” because of his ability to negate all magic around him with the help of “The Fool’s World” card.
2. Is Glenn Strong?
Glenn is extremely strong despite his lack of magical prowess. He is proficient in hand-to-hand fights, which, when used with the “Fool” card, makes Glenn even more powerful than other mages of the same rank.
I. Powers and Abilities
Thanks to his experience working under the Imperial Court Mage Corps, Glenn has mastered military hand-to-hand combat skills, which gives him a significant advantage when the “Fool” card is activated.
Furthermore, he can also perform a magical punch, with which he easily defeated Carrel Mardos and Jin Ganis.
While Glenn lacks in magical power and is commonly known as a third rate mage, he is exceptionally talented when compared to the others.
This is mainly because he was taught magic by Celica Arfonia, resulting in him gaining in-depth knowledge of magic and its usage.
Glenn has also developed his own type of magic, called “The Fool’s World,” which negates the activation of all magic within a certain radius, including his own.
However, this does not nullify spells that have already been cast. While nullifying the enemies’ magic, he then beats them using superior hand-to-hand combat skills.
These factors make Glenn very powerful and result in him having high kill counts and successful missions.
3. Glenn’s Attitude Towards Magic
In the beginning, Glenn was very outgoing and had aspired to become a mage of justice despite being ridiculed in school for his unimpressive skill. However, he soon became jaded and gave up on such goals.
This was best seen when he denounced magic as nothing but a killing tool. His attitude towards magic continually changes and evolves with time. Below you can see his attitude towards it during different periods of his life.
I. His Relation to Celica Arfonia
Before the start of the series, when Glenn was a child, he was separated from his parents due to an unknown accident, leaving him with no memory of his past.
He was then adopted by a powerful mage named Celica Arfonia.
After some time passed, Celica and Glenn both thought of each other as family.
She taught him all kinds of magic, which lead to Glenn finding a purpose, and he swore to become a mage of justice, using his magic to protect those around him.
II. His Time with the Mage Corps/Military
Despite his young age, he got into Alzano Imperial Magic Academy at 11. However, he didn’t exactly fit in well within the academy. Due to his low skill and poor use of magic, others only saw him as a hindrance or pest.
However, his talents were acknowledged by the Imperial Court Mage Corps, and he graduated at the age of 15 and eventually joined the mage corps and continued with his desire to fulfill his dream of saving people with his skill.
However, his time in the army, and the death of his partner Sara, caused him to become jaded and give up such goals.
III. Alzano Imperial Magic Academy
Although Glenn was initially unwilling to teach, he soon became attached to his students and his role as a teacher. He started to regain his old passion as he showed his class new ways to use magic, which in turn, changed his perspective.
His old drive to use magic was renewed when he rescued Rumia from Huey’s magic circles and was more than willing to use up all of his magic and put himself in harm’s way in order to save her.
In the end, despite not being particularly strong when compared to high-class mages, Glenn is someone who stakes his all after making up his mind.
His changing views on magic also show his readiness to move on and accept new realities, and it is because of these qualities that he manages to cross the gaps between him and other powerful mages.
