Is Gintama over or on Hiatus? What’s the Last Episode?

Hideaki Sorachi’s track record of trolling his fans into thinking that the series is ending every now and then, is a painful experience that fans bear.

So, the fact that fans must google if Gintama is over is almost hilarious but understandable. You would think that the numerous times Sorachi has trolled us would result in a heart of steel, however, that does not seem to be the case.

This article will go over the details regarding Gintama’s climax and what the last event in the anime is.

Hideaki Sorachi concluded Gintama’s manga on June 20, 2019. The anime had already entered the final arc of the series – the Silver Soul Arc.

The arc will further be adapted into a special and a movie – Gintama: The Final – that will release in early 2021, concluding the series for good.

Is Gintama Over?

Gintama’s manga ended a year ago on June 20th, 2019 after migrating to two different platforms such as Jump Giga and Gin Tama app after its initial run in Weekly Shounen Jump.

Gintama. Shirogane no Tamashii-hen which premiered on January 7, 2018 adapts a portion of the final arc in 26 episodes. The season was split into two cours that were aired in Spring season and Fall season of 2018.

However, the Silver Soul Arc spans over 108 chapters in the manga (Chapter 596-704). The anime has only covered content up until chapter 686.

With barely 20 chapters left to adapt, the production team has created a final film which will conclude the events of Gintama once and for all.

The movie, Gintama: The Final, is set to release on January 8, 2021 in Japan. Interestingly, another special was announced for Gintama which will tie-in the events of the anime with the film.

It is likely to release in early 2021. That’s it, folks! It is time to bring your tissues out because it is the final ride.

I. What Happens In The Anime, Though?

The anime ends on a perfect yet slightly abrupt note where Gintoki and Shinpachi cross paths after 2 years. The events of Shirogane no Tamashii-hen were turned on its axis when Utsuro falls into the Altana and disappears.

The story, then, jumps forward 2 years into the future where Edo has been reconstructed and the Amanto seem to be ever present like before. However, there seems to be a slight difference in the scenario that was shown to us back in Episode 1.

There seems to be a spark or a fighting spirit dormant in the residents of Edo, specifically, Kabuki-cho where the siege once took place.

The 2-year time-skip establishes that the threat of Utsuro has not been eliminated and that his reincarnated form would be used to revive Utsuro.

Towards the end of the anime, we see Gintoki and Shinpachi about to confront the Tenshouin Naraku members in disguise.

The implications of these events are that Earth is still in danger of Utsuro and his evil ambitions and that the story is slowly circling towards the final showdown.

II. So, Is Gintama Coming Back Then?

As mentioned earlier, Gintama is coming back in 2021 for a special and a final film which will adapt the final few chapters of the manga.

Gintama: The Final – Official Trailer

The movie is set to come out in less than 2 months and will finally close the chapter on the franchise that ran for over 14 years!

While Gintama struggles to gain ‘mainstream’ popularity on international platforms, its iconicity and strong presence in Japan will never be forgotten. The film may be the end to canon content but who knows what the future holds for us.

About Gintama

The story is set in an alternate-history late-Edo period, where humanity is attacked by aliens called “Amanto.” Edo Japan’s samurai fight to defend Earth, but the shōgun cowardly surrenders when he realizes the aliens’ power.

He agrees to an unequal contract with the aliens, placing a ban on carrying swords in public and allowing the invaders to enter the country. The samurai’s swords are confiscated, and the Tokugawa bakufu becomes a puppet government.

The series focuses on an eccentric samurai, Gintoki Sakata, who works as an odd-jobs freelancer. Although the story is mostly episodic, a few story arcs and recurring antagonists develop.
