Falling for Christmas Review: An Old-School Christmas Romance

Every Christmas, we have a bunch of new Christmas movies with a dash of romance. Falling for Christmas is yet another addition to that list. If you’ve always loved old-school Christmas movies such as Love Actually and The Holiday, there’s not much you’ll not like about this movie.

The film, like all classic Christmas films, begins a few days before Christmas. Love comes like a Christmas miracle for our lead couple and ends in happiness and reunion. I quite enjoyed it, since I generally love romantic Christmas movies.

However, if you are looking for something new or want to be surprised, this is not the film for you. It simply offers old wine in a new bottle. So, you’ll be able to guess what’s coming up quite easily. But there’s always something charming and comforting about the familiar, isn’t it?

1. Quick Review

In short, Falling for Christmas is an old-school, romantic Christmas movie with its heart in the right place. It is a good watch if you’re looking for something fresh and fun. The performances are good, the plot is quite predictable, but nevertheless heart-warming, and the Christmas feels are done right.

However, Falling for Christmas does feel silly at times with things falling into place too easily. Moreover, the chemistry between the lead couple could have been much better. In a film where romance plays a big role, it is important for the leads to look good and feel good with each other on-screen. Other than that, there’s not much to dislike in the film.

2. Is it worth watching?

If you ask me, yes. The film is neither bad nor boring, so if you’re looking for a nice romantic movie, this could be a good choice. The film offers nothing new. It is pretty similar to typical Christmas films that begin with two people meeting and ultimately falling for each other over Christmas.

Though the film is pretty forgettable, it is a sincere, formulaic attempt that will cheer you up if you’re looking for something easy-going. The film also marks the return of Lindsay Lohan, who delivers a pretty convincing performance.

I would not say the film is a must-watch but if you’ve got some free time, it could be a good pastime.

I. Plot

Sierra Belmont (Lindsay Lohan) is a spoilt heiress who faces a skiing accident while out with her fiancé, Tad, on a date. When she wakes up, she realizes that she has lost her memory. A young widower, Jake (Chord Overstreet), offers her refuge for a few days at the North Star Lodge.

Jake is worried about his lodge shutting down due to the lack of reservations, and Sierra (who now calls herself Sarah) helps him collect donations. During her stay, she forms a close bond with Jake’s daughter and, as expected, Jake and Sierra fall in love with each other.

The rest of the film focuses on their growing relationship, their attempt to save the North Star Lodge and how Sierra gets her memory back.

Watch out for the queer twist in the end–that’s a sweet addition and fits in well.

II. Performances

Lindsay Lohan delivers a convincing performance in her comeback film as Sierra Belmont, the spoilt heiress. Chord Overstreet also fits his role well. No particular performance stood out separately for me, but all of them were watchable.

III. Cinematography and Visuals

Nothing special to say in this department either. The film is beautiful to look at and does the Christmas feels right. You’ll see a lot of mistletoe, gifts, baked goods, and snow. It offers everything that is expected of a typical Christmas film in terms of visuals.

3. Final Thoughts

Overall, Falling for Christmas is a sincere, beautiful Christmas movie but nothing worth being called a classic. It is worth watching once, but you would really not want to go back to it again and again. It lacks the sort of repeat value that Christmas classics such as Klaus, Love Actually, The Holiday, and The Grinch have.

Nevertheless, it is a good watch if you have time, but nothing that cannot be skipped. I would actually prefer Love Hard, Netflix’s 2021 Christmas release over this one. Falling for Christmas is not a bad film by any means, but it is not worth raving about, either.
