The anime Fairy Tail has been received well all over the globe and enjoys overwhelming popularity. It has won numerous accolades, nominations, and distinctions not just in its home country Japan but outside Japan too.
In fact, in the Southeast Asian region, Fairy Tail was awarded the “Anime of the Year” Award by Animax Asia in 2010. Even in France, it received the “Meilleur Anime Japonais” Award (Best Japanese anime) at the 19th Anime & Manga Grand Prix.
1. Quick Review
Fairy Tail is filled with extremely humorous scenes, peculiar and unique characters, and an engaging plot that makes the viewing experience a good one.
The tremendous variety of supernatural powers helps make the plot much more entertaining than it would have been without them.
2. Is it worth watching?
The anime is definitely worth your time and gives you stories and life lessons that are inspiring and yet not over the top. It has many enjoyable and amazing story arcs that are weird, fun, intense and scary all at once.
While the anime Fairy Tail does show a lot of destruction and violence, it is not gory and quite age-appropriate, considering how mentally disturbing even some mainstream anime can be.
I. Plot
The plot of the anime is set in the magical kingdom of Fiore, where wizards and witches become members of guilds to earn money by helping people out with certain tasks.
The plot revolves around the infamous Fairy Tail guild as they come face to face with their personal traumas and encounter dark guilds. Dark Guilds are illegal guilds, who have been branded because of their unapologetic use of black magic for unethical purposes.
The plot traces the journey of Natsu Dragneel as he searches for his dragon parent figure, Igneel. Along the way, he meets fellow guild members like Lucy Heartfilia, Erza Scarlet, Gray Fullbuster, Wendy Marvell and Happy – the flying cat, along the way.
The plot can get a bit slow at times. Also, it has relatively very few fillers, if you compare it to anime like Naruto and Bleach. However, I found the progression of the plot to be tolerable though it undeniably has it’s moments of sheer frustration.
Also, the show explores the nuances and complexities of characters far more than one is used to. Hiro Mashima deals with all the layers and adds depth to the story while not losing track of the plot.
The plot moves on an arc format, where each arc introduces more characters and more engaging story lines. Each arc also has something to do about tackling each character’s tragic past, which helps viewers understand each character in depth.
II. Characters
The Fairy Tail universe is full of the most peculiar and interesting characters who add another layer of fun to the anime.
Each character has his/her own idiosyncrasies and peculiar qualities, which help differentiate him/her from the rest. Gray has this nasty habit of stripping at random moments, Natsu has motion sickness, Erza loves picnics and packs too much even for a short trip.
What is special about Fairy Tail is the strong bonds and sense of solidarity between the guild members. All of them care for each other as a real family would. It is really heart-warming and inspiring to watch the characters fight for what they believe in and for their loved ones.
It is, in fact, Natsu’s line to swear that he’ll protect his comrades. This is how Natsu wins every battle even when it seems like he’s about to lose. While Natsu embodies the cliché hot-headed Shounen protagonist, his character doesn’t get annoying and is a very relatable dynamic character.
3. Final Thoughts
The anime offers a very unique experience. The sort of communal bonding and prime importance is given to friendships reminded me of my favorite series, F.R.I.E.N.D.S. The anime is not without its flaws and shortcomings. Still, I found that its good points overshadowed the bad ones.
Interspersed with great fight scenes, amazing superpowers, moral lessons, and delightful characters, the anime Fairy Tail will make you fall in love with it and turn you into a hardcore fan!
