Is Esmeralda/Esme Shelby Lee returning to Peaky Blinders?

Esme is a name we hear quite a few times in Peaky Blinders Season 6 Episode 2. While the name might sound familiar to you, many of you might not be able to place it. After Tommy hears about Ruby’s fever and the phrase ‘Tickna mora O beng,’ he tells Lizzie that he will talk to Esme.

Once Tommy returns home, everything seems fine until Ruby’s temperature once again shoots up to 101 degrees. She says she’s hearing voices, coughing up blood, and has made drawings representing some ‘grey man.’

On hearing this, Thomas rings up Esmeralda Shelby Lee, aka Esme. But who is Esme, and why does Thomas call her?

Esme/Esmeralda Shelby Lee was John Shelby’s wife and left the family after John got killed. Tommy calls Esme because she comes from a lineage of gypsies, and only she can understand and interpret Ruby’s visions, drawings, and voices.

Who is Esme Shelby Lee?

Esme Shelby Lee is from the Lee family who are gypsies. She first appears in Season 1 when Thomas arranges a marriage between her and John Shelby as a form of truce between the two families.

However, after Luca Changretta’s men kill John Shelby, Esme blames Tommy and leaves the family. That was the last we saw her, and we don’t see her in Peaky Blinders Season 5.

In the Season 6 trailer, we saw a glimpse of Esme, and we knew that she might come back to the show. While some thought it would be for revenge against Tommy Shelby, it looks like the reasons might be completely different.

Why does Tommy call Esme at the end of Season 6 Episode 2?

Thomas hears about Ruby having a temperature and murmuring the phrase ‘Tickna more O Beng.’ He is shaken by this and knows it’s an ominous sign, not just a disease. Now that Aunt Polly is no more, he can’t use her help to understand any of this and so turns to Esme.

In Episode 2, Ruby hears voices and says that a grey man with green eyes is coming to get her and Tommy. She is also coughing up blood, and her temperature doesn’t seem to be lowering from 101 degrees.

This means Esme is returning to the show, and we might see more of her in future episodes. However, we don’t know how much she’ll be willing to help Tommy and, even if she is, how far she’ll be able to. I guess we just have to wait for the episodes to find out.
