Elliot does not have the best track record (arguably, no one in Euphoria does).
He has been utterly complacent in Rue’s drug abuse, while some might even blame him for encouraging it. Then there’s that bit where he cheats with her girlfriend, Jules. It’s looking very messy.
Now, there are rumors floating through the grapevine that Elliot could be more sinister than previously believed. That is, he could be working with Laurie.
Elliot’s full identity is yet a mystery and some fans believe this could be because he has connections with Laurie, the school teacher turned drug leader. He also sports a few tattoos that are tell-tale signs of drug dealers/gangsters.
I’m not going to lie, I’m on the fence with this theory but there are enough reasons for it to be true. So let’s get into a debate on whether or not this is possible:
Reasons Why Elliot May Be Working With Laurie
Since we’ve not yet had an episode focusing on Elliot or his backstory, we don’t know a lot about him.
Even then, other characters like Lexi or Fez whose backstories were explored a whole season later, at least had snippets of information that built up their character.
I still don’t know why Elliot lives alone, and if that’s legally even allowed. I also find it sketchy that his music makes him enough money to support his livelihood plus his drug habits.
The next unsettling bit is that it is possible that Elliot knew about Rue’s plan with the suitcase, and yet he helped flush it down the toilet.
If he was fully aware of Rue’s deal with Laurie, he would know it’s stupidly dangerous to get rid of Laurie’s drugs, especially if Rue had no way to pay her back.
Folks have also been theorizing that Laurie already knew that Rue wouldn’t be able to pay her back, and she would use this as a way to trap Rue.
To take this wild musing a step further, there are speculations that Eliot ratted Rue out and flushed down the drugs to get her in trouble with Laurie.
Could Elliot’s grand reveal be that he has some connection to Laurie? Perhaps he is not working for/with her, but he is tied to her in another way. Both Elliot and Laurie’s last names have not been revealed, and I can’t help but wonder why.
Reasons Why Elliot Is Not In Cahoots With Laurie
Is Elliot really an evil mastermind or is he just a misguided teenager who didn’t realize just how bad Rue’s addiction was?
Rue stumbled upon Elliot randomly in the laundry room and they became friends only because Rue could be open about her drug use without any repercussions or judgements.
In many instances the show has depicted that Elliot is not a drug addict, he’s a user and there’s a major difference — He’s also seen pretending to do drugs with Rue just to keep her company.
He likes the thrill of it, but his sanity does not depend on it. And as such, he’s never suffered its hard consequences like Rue has. In fact, I doubt he’s ever been in a dangerous situation like Rue was with Fez and Mouse.
So when Rue tells him about her “genius” plans for scoring drugs for free, he may have considered it as another reckless joyride like stealing alcohol. Worse yet, he didn’t know that Rue struck a deal with an actual drug leader.
So even though he thought it wasn’t his place to rat her out, he didn’t think that getting rid of the suitcase is that big a threat.
We also have to remember how Rue found out about Laurie in the first place. And just like that, Fez plays a role in her downfall twice.
The show has given us no real clues tying Elliot and Laurie together. So if anything, those who are suspicious of Elliot can only pin him down for not being the greatest friend.
Conclusion
At the beginning of Euphoria S2, Dominic Fike had told Variety that his character would face a lot of backlash from fans. Whether he was alluding to only the Rue-Jules-Elliot love triangle, or something more is still a mystery.
I’m still of the opinion that Elliot has his hands clean of all things Laurie. But if isn’t, it won’t be the first time that Euphoria has pulled a fast one on us.
