Dragon Ball DAIMA is now a boon to Dragon Ball fans, especially since the passing of Akira Toriyama; fans are finally able to savor what’s left of Akira’s legacy. While having a new series is all well and good, a question still lurks in the back of everyone’s mind… is Dragon Ball DAIMA a filler?
We have the answer to exactly that: whether Dragon Ball DAIMA is a filler or canon or whether you should watch it or not.
1. Is Dragon Ball DAIMA Canon?
Yes. Dragon Ball DAIMA is a canonical to the main Dragon Ball series. Most people would be confused upon hearing this since Dragon Ball DAIMA doesn’t have a manga or novel that it is based on. However, it’s still clear that Dragon Ball DAIMA is connected to events in both Dragon Ball Super and Dragon Ball Z.
Dragon Ball DAIMA’s connections to the main series should be reason enough for anyone to consider it to be canonical. Here’s the relation:
Goku’s Trip To The Demon Realm
In the first episode of Dragon Ball DAIMA, after all the main characters were turned into kids, a man named Glorio came to Earth to visit Goku. He requested Goku to come over to the demon world to defeat King Gomah, a tyrant in the demon world who was also responsible for Goku’s transformation.
During their travel to the demon world, Goku, Degesu, and Glorio had to stop at a warp point, which connects to Universe 7, where the demon world was. The very fact that they acknowledged the existence of Universe 7 points toward DAIMA’s relation with Dragon Ball Super. This is because of the introduction and explanation of the multiverse in Dragon Ball Super.
2. Should You Watch Dragon Ball DAIMA?
Here’s the simple take: If you’re a fan of the Dragon Ball series and up to date with Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super, then yes, you should watch Dragon Ball DAIMA.
Akira Toriyama was clearly involved in the creation of Dragon Ball DAIMA; even though this doesn’t stand true now, he clearly was involved in the initial stages of its making. Hence, DAIMA will be able to cover up plot holes and give better explanations of events from the prequels. Although not much as been revealed as of yet, we do expect DAIMA to drop a lot more lore by the time the series concludes.
If you need more reason to watch Dragon Ball DAIMA, the storyline is pretty solid, and it’s interesting enough to watch, even for someone who isn’t a fan of the series. The animation is fluid, and the comedy is on point, as usual.
3. Where To Watch Dragon Ball DAIMA?
Dragon Ball DAIMA releases weekly every Friday. It can be streamed online through official sources like Netflix, Crunchyroll, and Hulu.
4. About Dragon Ball Daima
‘Dragon Ball Daima’ is the fifth anime installment in the Dragon Ball franchise. The series was announced during the Dragon Ball Special Panel at New York Comic Con 2023, and it is set to air in fall 2024.
The story and settings, as well as many of the designs, are handled by Akira Toriyama, the original creator of the Dragon Ball series. The title “Daima” is a made-up term, which would translate to “Evil” in English. However, the kanji used for Daima means “great” and “demon/magic.”
In this series, due to a conspiracy, Goku and his friends are turned small, and they head off to a new world. It’s a grand adventure with intense action in an unknown and mysterious world.
