Donquixote Doflamingo still frequents the lists of the top favorite villains and is beloved by the fans. The main reason behind his popularity is his unabashed reveling in acts of evil.
He is cruel, sadistic, twisted, manipulative, a horrible human, and he owns it.
Just to give you an inkling of the deeds he’s committed, Doflamingo Killed his father and brother, took over a kingdom, started a chain of misery for years, and slaved thousands ranging from kids to the elderly.
His descent to Madness began at merely eight years old when what began as a courageous and noble decision by his father ended up becoming a hell that made Doflamingo its ruler.
Shunned by both the World Nobles and the commoners, he decided that instead of ruling the world as a Celestial, he would see it in utter chaos.
1. Is Doflamingo a Celestial Dragon?
Doflamingo is a Celestial Dragon because he is a descendant of one of the kings that established the world government. Despite being shunned by them, Donquixote Doflamingo has always considered himself a World Noble.
However, who exactly are Celestial Dragons that even Doflamingo wanted to be a part of them so bad?
As it turns out, the Celestial Dragons (Tenryubito), also known as the World Nobles, are the descendants of the nineteen of the twenty kings that established the World Government.
They have been given an aristocratic status and are allowed to live in the Holy Land of Mary Geoise.
Due to their connection to the World Government, they enjoy enormous power and consider themselves to be on an entirely different social scale than the commoners.
This mindset of theirs has developed to the point where they resin bubbles over their heads to prevent them from breathing the air of the ordinary people.
Believing themselves to be the descendants of the creators of this world, the Celestial Dragons are untouchable by law and are allowed to do anything they desire, except bring shame to the Tenryuubito.
By looking at the extent of the strength they wield and the privileges they enjoy, it is no surprise that Doflamingo’s father’s actions played an important role in shaping Doffy into who he is today.
2. Doflamingo’s Past – Shunned by the Celestial Dragons
I. Childhood
Around forty-one years ago, Doflamingo was born in the noble bloodline of the Donquixote family and enjoyed the privileges entitled to the Celestial Dragons.
However, it all came to an abrupt stop when his father, Donquixote Homing, abdicated their family’s status as World Nobles to live a normal life among the commoners.
The family took residence in the North Blue; however, when it became known that they were former World Nobles, their manor was burned to the ground by commoners.
Due to this, Doflamingo and his family lived in a dumpster and survived on stolen food.
These poor living conditions and lack of help from the Celestial Dragons led to Doflamingo’s mother’s death and the three remaining family members being tortured and beaten by the commoners.
During this time, Doflamingo’s brother, Rosinante, and his father were pleading to be let free, while Doflamingo threatened the crowd and directed hatred towards them and his family.
He blamed his father for condemning him to such hell and swore to exact revenge upon everyone who played a part in this.
After two years, his suffering led to him awakening his Haoshoku Haki, which was witnessed by Trebol. The latter then decided to make Doffy his king and gifted him a Devil Fruit and an ornate flintlock.
Armed with a weapon, Doflamingo killed his father and took his head back to Mariejois, hoping to be reinstated as a Celestial Dragon.
Unfortunately, due to his father’s actions, the Donquixote family was considered as blasphemous traitors, resulting in him being refused entry.
II. Rise to Shichibukai
After being denied and shunned by the Celestial Dragons, Doflamingo was still not allowed to go free.
Due to him being a former World Noble, he knew about Mariejois’ national treasure, and it is because of this exact reason that Doflamingo was considered a threat.
To wipe out the knowledge about the National Treasure and the stain on Celestial Dragons, they even tried to kill him.
Fortunately, he managed to survive and became a pirate. From then on, he established his own crew, Donquixote Pirates, and slowly started gaining power.
At some point in time, his brother, Rosinante, appeared and joined Doflamingo’s crew. However, in truth, he was a Marine Commander who was working undercover to arrest and put an end to his monstrous brother once and for all.
Unfortunately, his cover was blown, and Doflamingo killed Rosinante with his own hands just like he did to his father years back.
After gathering his crew and gaining more strength, he abused his knowledge of the National Treasure to gain rights that were somewhat equal to a Celestial Dragon.
Using that as leverage, he became a Shichibukai and took over Dressrosa, which was, quite conveniently, the kingdom that the Donquixote family ruled over 900 years ago.
Whether he chose to rule over Dressrosa because he was sentimental, wanted to prove something, or the Island was just a good base, we’ll never know.
3. The Secret of Mary Geoise
In episode 700, Doflamingo Donquixote revealed a shocking secret. According to him, there’s a national treasure in the Pangaea Castle of Mary Geoise that, if revealed, has the potential to shake the world.
He even went as far as to state that with immortality, he could have used the national treasure to conquer the entire world.
While the power of this supposed treasure was shocking, what came next was what actually had the audience gasping.
The secret of Mary Geoise, i.e., the National Treasure, is none other than a gigantic straw hat.
While fans knew that the straw hat was important, they assumed it to be in terms of symbolism. What has been shown exceeds all of our expectations, and we cannot wait until everything is finally revealed.
However, since there’s still some time before that happens, let’s see what Doflamingo is currently doing.
4. Where is Doflamingo Now?
Doflamingo was a Celestial Dragon, and despite falling from the “skies,” he still managed to become a pirate, a Shichibkai, and then, the ruler of an entire kingdom. He would have gone even further up if he had not come across Luffy.
After a gruesome fight, with Luffy losing terribly, Doflamingo thought his victory was set in stone. However, the former’s King Kong Gun broke through his attack and defeated him once and for all.
With this, Doflamingo’s tyrannous rule over Dressrosa came to an end, and the marines arrested him.
While there was a rescue mission by Jack, it was unsuccessful, and Doflamingo was taken to Impel Down and incarcerated in Level 6.
