Chainsaw Man is regarded as one of the few shounen series which has deviated from the stereotypical shounen tropes and dipped into the more mature territory.
The manga is even considered one of the first R+ shounen manga, owing to the sheer amount of gore it has.
Chainsaw Man is not age-appropriate for 13 years old kids since it has an awful amount of body horror, profanity, female nudity, and other prolific themes. Most rating systems in different countries have flagged the series as 17+ due to its mature themes.
The manga has certain chapters targeted toward mature audiences only. Chapter 59, for example, shows a disclaimer in the beginning since it has a graphic sex scene on a two-page spread.
The chapter is accessible only through the Viz Media website, rather than the good ol’ Shounen Jump app readers usually use.
Chainsaw Man Parents Guide
Chainsaw Man falls under the shounen demographic which is usually targeted towards teenagers, but some of its chapters are not appropriate for young readers.
The anime will be more or less faithful to the manga, so parents should be aware of what kind of content the series has.
- Violence and Gore: Denji mutilates other devils and zombies right in the first episode of the anime, setting a gruesome tone for the anime. Dismemberment, mutilation, spilling guts and lots of blood make a frequent occurrences in every chapter of the manga.
- Sex and Nudity: The series mostly contains female nudity, with characters like Power having almost no clothes at times. Sex scenes are rare, but Chapter 54 and Chapter 59 have some pretty explicit scenes of Quanxi and her harem which you should be aware of.
- Profanity: The profanity isn’t heavy in the series, but it is there nonetheless. The word ‘dog’ is used in a derogatory manner towards Denji in the first episode.
- Alcohol, Drugs and Smoking: Many of the characters in the series are adults, so they do their fair share of smoking and drinking alcohol. Characters like Aki and Himeno smoke quite regularly in the manga.
Will Chainsaw Man anime get censored?
MAPPA’s CEO, Hamura Otsuka, confirmed during a panel interview in Anime Expo 2022 that no scenes of the Chainsaw Man manga will get censored. Even though the manga has a lot of gory scenes, the production committee assured the fans that no scenes will be cut off.
The production committee wants the anime to feel as raw as its source manga, hence they have decided to remain faithful to the manga, even at the cost of getting the anime flagged with an 18+ rating.
