Glass Onion features several celebrity cameos, including the cameo of a renowned actor playing Benoit Blanc’s boyfriend. Filling big movies comprising of an already stacked cast with a bunch of celebrity cameos has been a recent trend in Hollywood.
From David Leitch films like Deadpool 2, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, and Bullet Train to Rian Johnson’s Knives Out sequel, the recent trend of celebrity cameos provides that extra bit of fun with each project.
The die-hard fans of the first Knives Out movie have already binged Glass Onion and can’t stop ravishing it, with some questions and unsolved theories waiting in their minds. Let’s dive into these theories and solve them for the fans.
1. Is Benoit Blanc gay?
Glass Onion director Rian Johnson confirmed the sexuality of Daniel Craig’s lead detective Benoit Blanc, who debuted in 2019’s Knives Out. Rian Johnson confirmed that Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc is gay.
Rian Johnson was reportedly super protective (and rightly so) of Glass Onion spoilers during a London Film Festival Q&A, trying to keep the puzzle box plot details locked ahead of the film’s release.
However, the director willingly confirmed one of the most important speculations regarding the franchise’s central character, Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig): the Southern detective’s sexuality.
As reported by Insider, a scene from the Knives Out sequel was made available to certain members of the press, hinting at the mysterious detective living with another man. During the press conference, Johnson was asked if this scene meant that Blanc is gay.
Yes, he obviously is. And there’s nobody in the world I can imagine in bringing me more joy for Benoit Blanc to be with.

Daniel Craig, who was also at the press conference, added, “No spoilers [but] who wouldn’t want to live with that person?” Along with Craig, who first appeared as Benoit Blanc in 2019’s Knives Out, the main cast of Glass Onion also includes Edward Norton, Kathryn Hahn, Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Leslie Odom Jr., and Janelle Monáe.
Bautista stated in an August 2021 interview that the film would feature plenty of exciting new characters, saying that he believed Glass Onion will be “as good, if not better, than the first one.”
Surely the confirmation of the detective’s sexuality has made the fans more excited and has kept them guessing regarding the identity of Benoit Blanc’s boyfriend. Following the reveal, plenty of fans have taken to social media to show their excitement.
2. Who is Benoit Blanc’s boyfriend?
The character of Philip played by the brilliant Hugh Grant is revealed to be Benoit Blanc’s partner in Glass Onion.
As we see Edward Norton’s Miles Bron sending out invitations to his private island, Detective Benoit Blanc receives one while in the bathtub.
Well, guess who answers the door to the deliverer?
The person answering the door is later revealed to be Hugh Grant in the role of Philip, Blanc’s boyfriend. Philips opens the door in a pink and green apron. He is baking and is annoyed that Blanc is too preoccupied with the bath to answer the door.
The other Glass Onion cameos might be great, but Grant’s appearance provides the potential to be a recurring Knives Out role.
3. Why is Hugh Grant the perfect casting for Benoit Blanc’s boyfriend?
Rian Johnson seemed very happy with Hugh Grant’s casting for the portrayal of Philips, and the audience reciprocated the same love for the character.
The casting is perfect because of the duality between Blanc’s character and Grant’s typical roles from his early days. Grant began his career as the typical British heartthrob who used his somewhat awkward, bumbling personality to win over his romantic counterparts.
The perfection in Daniel Craig’s portrayal of eccentric, hokey Benoit Blanc combined with the dynamics of Grant’s character surely guarantees a fun and thrilling ride in the upcoming Knives Out movies.
Imagining Grant’s awkward charm mixing with Blanc’s eccentric, flamboyant but well-natured detective is amazing. With Knives Out 3 currently in development, Grant should certainly return as Phillip so that the two characters can play off each other in a way Glass Onion did not allow for.
If Philips plays a bigger role in Knives Out 3, the movie could be more open in its depiction of their relationship and greater utilize its portrayal of an underrepresented community.
Not only this, but Phillip playing a more significant role could give much more depth to Craig’s Blanc, whose personal life has been mostly shrouded in mystery.
This, combined with the immense humor that could be wrought from the couple being central to a murder mystery, Craig’s already fantastic performance, and Grant’s talent, could create magic on the screen.
The fans have surely loved this twist and are already waiting for the third part of the franchise. Here’s to hoping we see more of the endearing Phillip soon!
