Atreus is the deuteragonist in the 2018 action RPG game God of War, created by the Sony Santa Monica Studios. He is the son of Kratos, the Greek demigod, and Faye, who was disclosed to be Laufey, a frost giant, during the end of the game’s main storyline.
However, this was not the only surprise the game had in store. Every gamer had their jaws on the floor when they heard about Atreus’s true identity!
Atreus is revealed to be Loki, the Norse god of mischief, in God of War (2018) when he tells Kratos that the Jötuns referred to him by the name of Loki, which he read on the murals in Jötunheim.
Kratos also instantly confirms that Laufey wanted to name Atreus “Loki” and must have referred him to other giants with the same name.
So, if Atreus is part frost giant and part god, what exactly is he the god of?
What is Atreus (Loki) the god of, in God of War?
Loki, in this case, Atreus, is considered to be the trickster god in Norse mythology who can change his shape and sex. He is never revealed to be fully good or evil in the mythologies because his sole goal is to create chaos.
Unfortunately, Atreus did not show any of these supernatural shapeshifting powers in the God of War (2018). Still, it is more than possible that he will start manifesting his divine powers in the upcoming sequel, God of War: Ragnarok.
Who is Atreus’ love interest in God of War?
Angrboda, a Jotun, is the main love interest of Atreus in God of War. She will make her appearance in the upcoming God of War: Ragnarok.
In an Instagram post, Santa Monica Studio publicized a list of characters who will feature in God of War: Ragnarok, which also contained the first look of the character of Angrboda.
The Norse mythological scriptures do not contain much information about Angrboda apart from the fact that she is a giant, wife of Loki, and mother of Hel, Fenrir, and Jörmungandr.
This uncertainty about her character gives the developers at Santa Monica Studio a lot of liberty, and they can use her as a primary plot device for the major events of God of War: Ragnarok.
