The anime Ascendance of a Bookworm is largely based on the light novel series and manga series that were serialized online. The light novel series became so popular that it sold almost a million copies.
In this light, it’s no surprise that an anime adaptation has been released. It started on October 3, 2019 and an OVA series was released in March 2020.
There are so many new anime shows with such rapid turnaround times, that making a choice is a task on it’s own. Scroll down to help you decide if you should be watching this series or not!
1. Article Highlights
The anime is definitely going to impress you. As it takes you through the hardships of a bibliophile of that time and place, it will be a good history lesson for the viewer.
Apart from that, it also has aesthetic value. The scenery, the art, and the characters are elaborate and there is great attention to detail.
2. Is it worth watching?
The anime follows the format of an anime, typical of the Isakai genre. As we are taken through the adventures of this headstrong, albeit sweet little girl, we can not help watching more. Add to that a sprinkle of magic, and the whole anime is wonderful.
I. Plot
The plot of Ascendance of the Bookworm revolves around a fragile five-year-old girl named Myne as she makes it her mission to create and print her books in her new world.
Her past life as Motosu Urano, whose life revolves around her love of books, is explored in depth. Before she died in an earthquake, she makes a wish to keep reading books forever in her next life.
However, she finds out that in her new world, not only are books scarce but also restricted to the bourgeois. As she encounters problems to live as she desires, she makes a strong commitment to making sure her wish is fulfilled.
The plot makes delightful use of the weak, albeit courageous character to get it progressing smoothly. It progresses at an even pace and does not feel hurried and messy. The plot is also heart-warming and won’t fail to deliver strong emotional punches.
In a span of around 26 episodes and some OVA episodes, the plot covers many nooks and corners of the plot. Hence, there are relatively few plot holes.
Also, the whole vibe of the anime feels cozy and safe. There is not always danger lying ahead. This feature is a huge breath of fresh air after the usual reliance of violence in anime.
II. Characters
The main protagonist of Myne (or Motosu Urano) is relatable, lively, and charming. Her struggles of wanting to live life on her own accord are inspiring. Her love for books drives the motivation of her character.
It is a good sight to watch a strong and engaging heroine who does not conform to the submissive girl trope in many anime. It feels great and inspiring to watch her decide on working towards making her dream a reality.
She is unfazed by the lack of access to books. Despite knowing of the immense difficulties that lie on her path, she willingly decides to tread that path. Her boldness and industrious attitude are admirable.
Despite her petite figure and very young age, she shows exhilarating amounts of resilience and strength. For that, the anime stands out from the rest.
As she sets off on her mission to create and write her own books, she meets friends who help her along the way. Lutz is her childhood best friend, who acts as the executioner of many of her ideas. Their friendship is portrayed well and is, in fact, a central focus of the anime at times.
III. Themes
It is a brilliant coming-of-age story that is executed with sympathy and poignancy. The thematic pattern and plot of the story are quite similar to that of the recently released anime The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me?
In both the anime, we are introduced to the protagonists who are given a second chance at life, although in a different world, era and place. It is a pleasurable experience to watch the elaborate character development of the two.
3. Final Thoughts
I would recommend the anime to everyone, regardless of whether they love watching anime or reading books. This is a testament to my love for the concept note and characters of this anime.
The main protagonist of Myne is exactly the kind of female protagonist that we need in higher quantities.
Its inspiring story and storyline make it a unique anime. It is too precious to be missed out on. Coupled with some history lessons of the printing press and novel, the anime will pull you into its world and make you fall in love with it.
