Code Geass is one of those anime we use as the introduction for a new fan. The plot gets you hooked right from the start and the morally-grey character of Lelouch reels the Shakespeare-nerds into the fold.
Code Geass itself has a rather straightforward watch order but things get convoluted because of Akito the Exiled. Let’s set things up straight first.
Akito the Exiled is not connected to Code Geass in terms of plot. It is a spin-off OVA movie that belongs to the same universe as Code Geass, and chronologically takes place between R1 and R2.
Since it’s a side story, it can be watched in any order, based on personal preference.
1. Is Akito the Exiled Canon?
Akito the Exiled is canon to the Code Geass manga and contains 5 episodes. It revolves around the protagonist Akito Hyuga during the invasion of Britannia.
It is set in Europe aka Europia United, and Chronologically it takes place between Seasons 1 and 2 of Code Geass, without affecting the main plot.
The story follows the wZERO led by Leila Malcal to fight against Britannia during its invasion.
Akito was a crucial part of this unit as he possessed a Geass ability that would help him during battle. Shin Hyuga, Akito’s half-brother served as the antagonist of this OVA, who is depicted as mentally ill and ruthless.
We even see Julius Kingsley (Lelouch with false memories) guarded by Suzaku Kururugi. They were sent by Charles for aid against Britanians.
2. Is It Necessary to Watch Akito the Exiled?
It is not necessary to watch Akito the Exiled since it’s not connected to the main plot of Code Geass, however, if you plan on playing the games then you should watch it as characters and scenes are referenced.
Akito the Exiled is for those of you who want to see more of the Code Geass Universe and play its games.
