Is ‘Agents of SHIELD’ Part of the MCU Canon? We Finally Know the Answer!

The canon status for the MCU series Agents of SHIELD has finally been addressed in a new book.

Agents of SHIELD was originally created as a part of the MCU timeline, though the show was never connected to the Marvel films. But at the same time, the series directly influenced films like Avengers: Age of Ultron. Therefore, there has always been confusion about whether or not Agents of SHIELD is canon to the MCU.

The situation with Agents of SHIELD has been addressed in a new book titled Marvel Studios: The Marvel Cinematic Universe – An Official Timeline. The book covers the entire timeline of the MCU from Phase 1 to Phase 4 in great detail.

Although the book discusses Phil Coulson’s sacrifice in The Avengers, his resurrection or his team in Agents of SHIELD is not mentioned or hinted at all. In other words, Agents of SHIELD is not directly connected to the MCU canon if we go by the book.

However, this is not all, as there’s hope for the series to converge into the MCU timeline sometime in the future. Kevin Feige, the CEO of Marvel Studios, assured fans in the book’s preface that anything can change. Here’s what he said:

On the Multiverse note, we recognize that there are stories – movies and series – that are canonical to Marvel but were created by different storytellers during different periods of Marvel’s history. The timeline presented in this book is specific to the MCU’s Sacred Timeline through Phase 4. But, as we move forward and dive deeper into the Multiverse Saga, you never know when timelines may just crash or converge (hint, hint/ spoiler alert).

Feige’s words indicate that the studios are planning for a much larger endgame for the MCU Multiverse Saga. The endgame will be much larger than Infinity War and Endgame and might feature the convergence of many other MCU shows, including Agents of SHIELD. The saga is set to culminate into two of Marvel Studios’ most ambitious projects, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Secret Wars is often rumored to bring in a much-needed reboot of the MCU, so it is possible that Agents of SHIELD might become a part of the timeline eventually through the film.

Interestingly, Daredevil: Born Again is being reworked from the beginning as Marvel Studios intend it to be more similar to Netflix’s Daredevil, despite Feige considering these shows outside his canon. Therefore, the door is not closed for the Agents of SHIELD characters to turn up in Phases 5 and 6.
