The PS5, on its own, is a pretty stellar console but it falls short against the Xbox Series X in a handful of departments. Especially the ability to expand internal storage with an external SSD drive to make space for the latest and greatest new-gen titles.
At the launch of the PS5, Sony announced that players will not be able to expand their storage using SSDs but it is something that the company would be adding to the console in the near future. Now we know that the ‘near future’ is quite close at hand.
According to a report by Bloomberg, Sony is getting ready to upgrade the internal storage on the PS5 and will be rolling out the feature this summer. Once this feature is enabled via a future firmware update, players will be able to add M.2 SSD expansion cards right to the inside of their PS5 consoles.
Sony neglected to mention a more precise date and time for when the update will arrive.
“As previously announced, we are working to enable M.2 SSD storage expansion for PlayStation 5,”

“The timing has not been announced and details will be shared later.”

Currently, the PS5’s SSD maxes out at 825 GB from which about 158 GB is reserved for system files and updates. This leaves gamers with 667 GB of storage for games, media and save files which, to be quite honest, is not enough to house many new-gen titles at the same time.
New AAA titles like Call of Duty Warzone and Hitman 3 take up over 100 GB of space so if you want to have a fair share of choices on your PS5, you need an external drive.
Despite facing severe supply issues, the PS5 has become the fastest-selling console in US history. Sony shipped over 4.5 million consoles to house-ridden gamers in 2020, many of which have infamously landed in the hands of scalpers as well.
