Intel’s Battlemage GPU-Powered Arc Graphics Cards to Feature New Tech, Architectural Fixes and More

Intel’s new 2nd Generation graphics card based on the Arc Battlemage GPU architecture will be bringing in some new technology. Intel Arc’s Spokesperson Tom Petersen revealed new details during the latest edition of PCWorld’s “The Full Nerd” podcast.

Tom Petersen didn’t go into any specifics, but he said most of the design team is working on Intel’s 2nd Generation graphics card lineup called Arc Battlemage which will feature cool new tech and also fix issues discovered on the architecture-level on Alchemist GPUs.

Here’s what he had to say about it:

Obviously, I am not going to disclose new dates for Battlemage or specs but I can say that the bulk of our design team, both on the architecture and software side, are working on it and progress is accelerating and moving along quite quickly. There are some cool new technologies that I want to talk about that I won’t but let’s just say that Battlemage is our 2nd generation discrete graphics card, it’s moving along as expected and the bulk of our team is on it.

Emphasis were made on better ray-tracing, better DX12 scaling and Artificial Intelligence (AI) although Intel isn’t ready to use NVIDIA’s AI-driven Frame Generation technology just yet. Both Intel and NVIDIA use AI on their GPUs for upscaling techniques like XeSS and DLSS. It’ll be interesting to see how Intel will use AI tech on their GPUs.

“Is Battlemage going to be better? I absolutely expect so, it’s a new technology, it’s a new architecture, we fixed some known bugs, let’s call it architecture bugs (things), that had we already had our first generation we wouldn’t have done. Think about how much we have learned this generation and all of that has been pushed into Battlemage so you’ll see better scaling on DX12, better ray tracing, things that you’d expect us to do as we move forward on a discrete cadence.”

Listed below are the features which are rumored for the Xe2 Battlemage GPUs:

  • Next-Gen Memory Subsystem & Compression
  • Improved Ray Tracing
  • Micro-Architecture improvements
  • Next-Gen ML-based rendering tech
  • Latest DeepLink capabilities
  • Targeting Performance/Enthusiast Gaming

Recent leaks have pointed out that Intel is developing a soft reboot/refresh of their Alchemist GPUs codenamed Alchemist+ which will be released later this year while Battlemage is scheduled to release in 2024 but more information about it is expected later this year. Intel is working on two Battlemage GPU variants called Xe2-HPG for Discrete and Xe2-LPG for Integrated.
