Intel’s XeSS AI Upscaling Won’t Launch until ‘Early Summer’

Despite promoting XeSS during the Arc GPUs marketing campaign, the first arc-powered laptops which rolled out today have arrived without Intel’s much-anticipated AI-fueled upscaling technology.

As per Roger Chandler, Vice President at Intel Corporation, Xe Super Sampling (XeSS) isn’t ready yet and won’t be available until ‘early summer.’ This implies that Intel’s reply to DLSS and FSR could now launch alongside the Arc 5 discrete mobile GPUs sometime in June.

Unfortunately, anyone who went ahead and purchased the Arc 3 A350M and A370M GPUs today will have to do without the upscaling technology for quite some time. No doubt, this wait can give birth to a void, but practicing the virtue of patience will do you the world of favor. Why, you may ask?

The adoption of XeSS is ever-growing, and the catalog of games is much more extensive now, thanks to the inclusion of more indie, double-A, and triple-A games. Here is a list of titles that are already compatible with Intel’s fine piece of tech:

  • Crystal Dynamics’ Shadow of the Tomb Raider
  • Codemasters’ Grid Legends
  • Tango Gameworks’ Ghostwire Tokyo
  • Kojima Productions’ Death Stranding: Director’s Cut
  • Sharkmob’s Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodhunt
  • Deep Silver Fishlabs’ Chorus
  • IllFonic’s Arcadegeddon
  • Ubisoft’s The Settlers
  • IO Interactive’s HITMAN III
  • Massive Work Studio’s Dolmen
  • Wonder People’s Super People
  • Torn Banner Studios’ Chivalry II
  • Darkflow Software’s Enlisted
  • Exor Studios’ The Riftbreaker
  • Action Square’s ANVIL

Since Intel’s XeSS website also flaunts the logos of PUBG Studios and Techland, there’s also a chance that PUBG and Dying Light 2 would be harmonious with the AI.

There’s no doubt that Intel will have to play oodles of catch-ups to make their name in an industry that Team Red and Team Green already dominate.

With AMD announcing FSR 2.0 and DLSS’s ever-expanding library of games, Intel will surely have to bend backward to get enthusiasts’ attention.

Having five quality modes is one such feature that helps XeSS stand out from the crowd. In contrast to DLSS and FSR, that pack four quality modes, Intel’s XeSS comes with five: Ultra Performance (3.0x scaling factor), Performance (2.0), Balanced (1.7), Quality (1.5), and Ultra Quality (1.3).

Still, Intel has a long way to go, and it looks like we’ll have to wait for a while before the technology is there to be assessed. Hopefully, when XeSS does arrive this summer, Intel will have a bunch of flagship and limited-edition GPUs waiting for it.
