Intel Raptor Lake ES CPU  20% faster than Alder Lake in multi-threaded tests

Just recently we saw results of performance tests on Intel’s upcoming 13th Gen Core Raptor Lake processor. The benchmark comes from Expreview, just hours after leaked tests of an i9-13900 with 24 cores. The chip in use is an engineering sample of Intel’s Raptor Lake i9-13900 CPU. This explains why the clock speeds are unimpressive in the tests.

The particular sample in use features 8 Performance cores and 16 Efficient cores, called Q0D8 which is recognized as ES1 (early engineering sample).
It also possesses 32 MB of L2 cache combined with L3 cache giving us 68 MB total which is rumoured to be labelled as “Game Cache.” Although the sample is at 3.8 GHz, the final clock speed is expected to be around 6 GHz.

Expreview compared this Raptor Lake CPU with an Alder Lake CPU at the same frequency of 3.8 GHz Turbo Boost and 1.4 GHz base clock. The tests revealed very interesting results with the Raptor Lake chip being 20% faster than the Alder Lake across many multi-threaded tests. Earlier we saw a preview from SiSoftware comparing the Raptor lake CPU with its previous-gen counterpart that also predicted similar results.

The processor was tested on an ASUS ROG Maximus Z690 EXTREME motherboard with 32GB of DDR5 memory running at 2600 MHz (5200 MT/s). It is mentioned that the motherboard BIOS is not optimized for this processor, although it appears to be supported already.
Popular Cinebench R20 and R23 tests showed that single-threaded performance is lower by 10% while the multi-threaded performance is 25% faster.

Other tests included were Sandra 2021, 7-Zip, X265, POV-Ray, and Blender. The test results were what was expected from the extra cores in the Raptor Lake CPU. What was concerning though was the gaming performance.
The gaming tests on 1080p revealed that the Raptor Lake was outperformed across every game by the Alder Lake.

But keeping in mind that this is an Engineering Sample, the final chip should hopefully produce much better gaming results. You can find the full gaming test results by Expreview here

With Intel’s chips rumoured to feature a 6 GHz clock speed and feature Efficient Thermal Velocity Boost, we’ll be keeping a close eye on what AMD has in its stores to counter it. Both Intel Raptor Lake series and AMD Ryzen 7000 series chipsets arrive in Q4 this year.
